Hi: has anyone had any success gluing melamine, phenolic etc I have not had much success using the regular wood glues, even gorilla glue doesn't work. I have tried cutting glue grooves and it still doesn't have real holding power. I was told that I could use plastic glue such as plastic pipe glue, will that work and if so which of the many pipe glues do I use. Thanks HR

There are glues specifically intended for gluing melamine. Roo Glue is one brand.

A quick note re cutting melamine. I have had good success with cutting it by first taking a very shallow cut, say 1/32" along the cut line , then making a full cut. Chipout is very minimal. [Good face down on a table saw]

Do you just butt joint it with screws or put into a dado?

Keep in mind that even using a melamine adhesive, joints will not be anywhere near as strong as wood to wood joints (or even particle board to particle board joints). The reason is that the melamine coating does not have adhere to the particle board substrate as stongly. We built thousands of cabinets using melamine coated substrates and always used biscuits to reinforce joints.

I want toi thank everyone that took time to answer, I went to woodcraft a lo and behold there was Roo glue, I bought a bottle and am looking foward to using it. I make my jigs out of melamine because of the stability and straightness of melamine and other similar products. thanks again. HR
