How do I do final honing of plane blades with leather disks on the 3mm platter? This would be the final step after using the 9 micron abrasive.

The thinnest strop leather I could get is 1.5 mm. This would raise the abrasive surface and change the microedge. The instruction manual advises to cut up an old flannel shirt and use that. I wanted something a bit less primitive.

I use the 4 <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />LV recommended abrasives on 4 mm platters (I bought one extra). On the 3mm platter, I use an adhesive backed metallurgical polishing cloth with 1 micro-meter (micron) diamond paste.

I found the Lap Sharp paper at Highland Hardware. (quote from CK.)

A colleague of mine who is a metallographer gave me the cloth based on my requirements. The company that makes it is Leco (www.leco.com (http://www.leco.com)) and it is a "White Technotron".

If I get the Lapsharp paper, it already has a grit much courser than the diamond compound I'm using. I'm going down to about .5 Micron. That's equiv to about a 10,000+ stone.

That's why I bought the leather. But the damn thickness changes the micro bevel angle on the MK II. I'll try that metallurgy fabric.

Thanks, all.
