I am going to use pocket hole joinery on a face frame I am building. I was looking at the Kreg Rocket system vs Kreg K3 standard kit and was wondering which one I should get. I will be using it on face frames only 3/4 inch think.

How often do you think you will be making them? If a lot, you might want the kit, otherwise for a few, the Rocket should do fine, I think. About 10 minutes ago, I used the "mini" to put some in a board for a shelf I'm installing. Do some test holes on scrap to get the right penetration.

The K3 standard kit can be upgraded to the K3 Master if you ever wanted to do that in the future. You can screw it to a big piece of wood and drill your holes if there is no other way to clamp it.

The Rocket works great, about a 10 minute learning curve. However, you will likely think of so many applications for pocket holes after face frames you'll wish you had the K3 standard - I know I do.

I keep threatening to get a larger setup but my mini is so versatile, I have yet to require it. If you go for the K# or whatever (they look very nice) I would pick up a mini too. Very handy for work you can't get to with a larger unit.

David,

Splurge.

No really, once you start with the pocket holes, well

the applications are endless. I have even solved some

really wierd house framing problems with my kreg.

Note, I have only been playing with pocket holes for about two years.

Before that, I scoffed at the notion of screw jointery.

Silly me, I am ordering a Foreman at the end of the month.

Hey Per, What's a Foreman? I really don't know but I figure it's not a grill.

kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

I added the k's because my message was too short to post.

I believe the latest "super duper" system (K-3?) has a loose, single-hole jig as part of the kit. I originally had the metal bodied "portable" jig (can't remember one or two holes) and didn't use it all that much, because I had a pretty good jig setup for biscuit joinery when making face frames. Since moving up to the bench mounted Kreg, I've put my biscuit joiner away for face frames. The latest kit is not cheap - $149 or so - but it is way better for face framing on some kind of semi-production schedule. If you build bookcases, entertainment centers, chest of drawers, etc in addition to kitchen cabinetry, the bench mounted unit may be the way to go. Best of luck.

The whole kit is worth getting. I mounted the larger unit on a board and never stopped using it!

I have a Kreg A-2 (I wishI had another one ) and the second generation Kreg, but not the K-3. The rocket can be built into a jig, using the toggle clamp against the jig and a fence BEHIND the work piece. The cheapest way to buy replacement bits is to buy the mini for $19.99

David ~ I agree with Mark, get the kit - it's a worthy investment. Especially like the ability to leave the larger base in the shop and the portable for site work. The mini is also very handy. Think the K3 is down to $139 now.

Alan~ If you haven't Googled or checked Amazon, the Foreman is Kregs pocket hole machine (available electric or pneumatic).

Thanks Todd, No I haven't googled it. For some reason that didn't come to mind. I guess I figured some of the stuff we talk about is not googlable. :) Thanks again. Alan

Alan,

Sorry for the delay,

The new (semi) foreman is a electric bench top model.

Small enough to bring right to the job.

there is also a $50 rebate untill the end of the month.
