At our last club meeting we had a demo on making spoons. They're pretty easy for the first part, then the actual spoon hollowing becomes an adventure. These are small, top one is sycamore,4 1/2" long. The bottom one is english walnut, 6" long. The second pic show how to mount then to hollow the spoon. I used a piece of bicycle inner tube to pad it so the jaws didn't leave a mark. Now I need to make a sugar bowl or salt dish to go with them.

HI Curt,
What kind of "Old Iron" is that you're turning on?

HI Curt,
What kind of "Old Iron" is that you're turning on?

It's an Oliver 159 like the one Steve Ash has been restoring. Mine was redone when I bought it though. They're solid as a rock and smooth as glass.

Quit it Curt... now I have to go try one and I'm in the middle of something else. Just kidding, I really like the idea... as a matter of fact, all of the things you've brought to the table... literally.:D

Those are really cool, Kurt. I have seen shorter spoons turned but the guy used a jam chuck and was limited in size to his jam chuck. Your idea of using rubber to cushion the jaws does not limit you in size except for jaw capacity. I use a similar method on occasion to reverse turn boxes but I use a four winged piece of leather with which I hold the box in the jaws. Great idea!;)
