View Full Version : Spalted Sweet-gum

Here is a piece of wood I got from Travis last month before I left his place. It is spalted sweet-gum and finished out at 12-1/2"x 5" and is finished with wipe on poly and then buffed.
It is a bit thicker then I intended for it to be but it was cracking in the top and that is why the hole is as big as it is. I finally stopped before I last it.
Travis did a better job on his half.;)
Thanks for looking.

What a great job Dick! I take back all those nasty things I said about sweet gums back when I lived in Baton Rouge and had about a dozen in my yard. Had I know what their insides could look like I would have cut them down sooner!

Wow! Beautiful wood! Colors are amazing.
It's funny you posted that. Yesterday I (finally) went down and cut some sweet gum that was on the ground and found a similar spalted color and pattern in a limb. Not quite as prounounced as yours. I was totally amazed at the orange spalting and wondered if it was typical of if it was like the blood red dogwood spalting I found once. Just a one time thing.
It was really wet and I have it soaking in a DNA right now.
I think I will check with the owner and see about cutting some on the tree that fell. I may have a gold mine and not know it!

Man-o-man Dick, that is a real beaut. That sweetgum really spalts up nice. Hmmm... I know where there are three trees about 4' in diameter. Wonder if my mother would miss one????
