Howdy~

Stopped at a couple tag sales today (New England is a great place for old hand tool scores) and picked up this plane. The front of the wooden sole is imprinted "Sargent & Co No 3416". The iron is a Stanley with the sweetheart logo. The lever has "Pat Feb 3-91" on it. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

In peace, Todd

It appears to be a Sargent copy of one of Stanley's transitional jack planes, lots of other companies copied stanley's designs and sometimes even used the same numbers. The copies often sold for less money than the stanleys they were copied after.

Hi Todd,

For things Sargent, take a look at these sites which cover history of and model information.

http://www.roseantiquetools.com/id142.html

http://www.thckk.org/sargent.html

And for printed, authoratative information:
Dave Heckel- Sargent Planes Identification and Value Guide. Fine Tool Journal sells them. FTJ books (http://www.finetoolj.com/Booklist.html)

Take care, Mike

Yup...looks like a clone of the Stanley #26 transitional jack I own...

Your plane is a Sargent 15" transitional plane made between 1891 and 1918. It looks to be in good condition and is probably fairly common.

Pop off the lever cap and chipbreaker/iron and look at the bottom of lateral adjustment lever. It is a Type 1 (1891 to 1901) transitional if the bottom of the lateral looks like a horseshoe. These are more scarce and a bit more valuable.

HTH.

Thanks for the info & links. It does have a "horseshoe" at the bottom of the lateral adjustment lever. The plane is in really decent shape (I think). When time allows I'll have to seek out someone who can help me fine tune this and a couple other planes that I'd like to be users one day.

Looks like you have a Type 1 Sargent 3416. It should make a nice user and I suspect there are a few c*llect*rs who might like to get their hands on it. :)

The patents on the Sargent 3416 plane are the 1891 Horseshoe lateral and for the Second Lateral adjustment. Made over the 1891 - 1918 period.

Body and knob were shellacked beech, with a japanned cast top.

Looks like a nice example.
