OK, I had this ugly chunk of Sakura, that is an offcut, just junky looking, destined for the burn pile,
but I thought I'd try to get something out of it.

Bug infested, worm holes, punky wood, just a mess, but I figured it might be worth the trouble.

Here I've cut most of the crap off the bottom and I've made the tenon.

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/ugly/ugly_2_close.jpg
Another shot, the grain and pattern in this wood is very nice

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/ugly/ugly_4.jpg
OK, all chucked up ready to go

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/ugly/ugly_5.jpg
Another shot, just took a big of a cut, and noticed it was time to do some other work.

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/ugly/ugly_bowl1.jpg
OK, here is the roughed piece, the grain and coloring is very unique.

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/ugly/ugly_bowl2a.jpg
There are a couple of spots that are still a bit punky, but I'll see what I can do with it

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/ugly/ugly_bowl3a.jpg
Neat looking wood

Sure glad I saved this one from the burn pile!

I sealed it up, and warpped it in shavings and newspaper, now I have to wait.

Cheers!

Dang it Stu, if you keep posting stuff like this I'm gonna have to buy me a chuck. That piece of wood is a great little gem in the rough.

Well I got the $42.50 Grizzly chuck, the shipping cost $43 :D

Great little chuck, it is not a Nova or Oneway, but for me, on the C-Man lathe, itis worth it!

Cheers!

Good lookin bowl Stu. That piece could have been mounted either way. The other way and you would have had your first natural edge.
Can't wait to see it finished.

Second NE actually, but the bark end of it was mostly loose and really rotten stuff, it would not have held. I could easily pick chunks off by hand

I'm hoping it survives the drying, as this Sakura really moves a lot, so I made it on the thin side, hoping that less wood mean less movement...

The bottom is thinner than the sides.

We shall see.

Cheers!

Nice work, Stu! No point in gettin' rid of a perfectly good chunk of wood, eh? :D

Can't wait to see this one when it dries and you get it finished! Very interesting grain/color in there.

Stu, you really do have some cool woods over there. Great salvage job.

Thanks Chris.

The piece I have to send for the dirty turning thing is a nice piece of Sakura as well, but not as "iffy" as this piece.

It is Sakura, but the wood has a grain that looks like Oak, but not open like Oak.

Cheers!

We can hope ;) I know if you turn wet wood quite thin (1/4" thick or so), you will still get plenty of movement, but the thin walls are more resistant to cracking.

Nice job on the piece! Nothing like saving firewood and fulfilling its destiny :)

Noticing a pattern there Stu? :D The uglier the better (most times). At least that what I find.

Of course I do have one that is so ugly I just don't see any way it could stay together if you spun it.

Stu.......You are smoking with that lathe and new tools! Can't wait to see how this bowl turns out! It ought to have some beautiful grain patterns!

Thanks guys.

I can't wait to get a better lathe!

I can stall the motor on this one with good solid cuts, any time I want, and on the bigger bowls (which really are not that big) I can feel the whole head stock flexing.

Still looking for a lathe..... :(

Allright STU!!! Fantastic save, awesome roughed out bowl! I'm with everyone else, can't wait to see if that one survives the drying process - if it does it will be spectacular.

Thanks Ernie.

The bowl is not very big, so I broke down today and bought a litre of medical Ethanol, at a discount drug store, cost me $6.

It's soaking right now :D
