I was out running some errands and noticed an arborist company taking down a tree. I pulled over and asked "what type of tree was that" - Elm they answer it was hit by lightning. "Wow - who can I talk to about maybe getting some of that wood?" I say. "Well we are gonna have to cut it up into pieces and throw it into that grinder - so you'd be saving us some work if you can take it"
Long story short - I worked out a deal with the homeowner and the arborist in exchange for the tree I'll be making them each a piece of furniture - The base section is 32" diameter x 12' and the upper section is 22" diameter x 10' plus some other nice hunks. My sawyer friend lives 4 houses up and will be picking it up and sawing it for me tomorrow. My friend grew up in the house where the tree was felled - said it was there before his father bought the house 90 years ago - the tree is over 100 years old.
Pics to follow.

Elm is a rich and springy wood.

Do you have access to a kiln for drying?

Yes - there is a commercial yard not far from me. 50BF minimum. I'll probably just have a little bit kiln dried at first while I let the rest season for a year or so....
