Good Friday Morning Everyone,

Looks like a rainy, cooler weekend here in Okieland. Which translates into less yard work and more shop time.........I hope! I have began finishing the knockdown bookcase and my intentions are to have that project completed this weekend. I also need to start getting ready for the big shindig at Terry's next weekend. I am hoping to see many of you there.

So what's happening in your slice of the world this weekend? Hopefully a little sawdust creation.

Have a great weekend and a safe and relaxing holiday!

Bob

Still working on the baby furniture. I have the changing station frame finished. This weekend I will be finishing up all the solid wood pieces, drawer fronts, doors and the two tops. The yard is also calling me. Yuk!

Doors, drawers and dust are on the schedule. I suppose I'll have to cut my own lawn, too, since my father went back to Florida. :D (Get him near my tractor and he's like a kid in a candy store...) LOML and I will also be going to the local "art film" theater and viewing Winged Migration, an outstanding documentary film and having dinner with some friends over the weekend.

Well actually the North East River I think - but close enough :D
No WW'ing for me this weekend but it's OK! I'm spending a long weekened with just me LOML & LOML jr. at my Dad's weekend place on the bay - the plan is to do as little as possible except watch the boats go by sipping on Iced Tea spiked with some Captain Morgans Coconut Rum my Dad was nice enough to leave behind

I found out that I can get a local web connection so while the girls are at the beach (I hate the beach - love the water but hate the sand) I might play on the internet a little & I do have some work I need to get done for another forum that I help out on.

If I get energetic I might put one of the jet skis in & have some fun carving up the bay  Although the weather forcast looks a little iffy :(

So it's taken it easy time for me for the next few days - Y'all have fun too!

I started this morning and got a jump on the weekend. My new Jet Mini just got three new lower clamp brackets to replace the stock round washers on the underside of the bed ways. I'm happy to report that my tailstock no longer creeps, when locked it is solid as a rock.

I machined two extra clamp brackets, one for an old tool post from another lathe that is much heavier than the stock Jet tool post. I have two tool rests that fit the old tool post with 7/8" diameter shanks, one is 6" and the other is 12" long. The third clamp bracket will replace the round one that is under the Jet tool post.

I will post pictures and a sketch of the machined clamp brackets this evening for those of you who are interested. The 2" long brackets were made from 1/2" thick steel plate and step machined to fit the underside of the bed ways. This more than doubled the contact area with the ways and tripled the female thread penetration over the 10mm nuts that were installed at the factory. This keeps the bolt from skewing and maintains the perpendicular alignment between the the tool post and the lower bracket.

I hope to spend more time machining more goodies for the Jet Mini this weekend and get a few hours in on my latest scroll saw project. It's so hot here it is almost impossible to breathe outside so there will be lots of shop time this weekend.

Everyone be extra careful during the holiday weekend, the crazies will be out on the highways and lots of Bud Light will be consumed. You will all be safer in your workshops this weekend than traveling, stay home and make chips.

Well, still no ww for me. Looks like installing an A/C unit in the wall in the MBR.

Sunday however, we go fishing!!!

Then I start working on how to get my 26'x26' hay barn converted to my ww shop. The original plan was to put up another outbuilding to hold all of the overflow that's in the haybarn but with my recetn surgery and restrictions for the next bunch of months, putting up a new building is out!!

This is good news as it means I may actually have a shop next spring.

Oh, I also got's to fix our water system. The float swtich for turning on the main well doesn't float much anymore.

Have fun all !!

I'll be sweeping, vacuuming, de-greasing, etching and washing the floor in the shop in preparation for the epoxy paint.

I could also work on finishing up a few more circuits, but those will wait.

Our State Fair, held in the town where I live, starts on Saturday, and I entered a few wood items. I'll have to go see how they did!

My Wife wants to clean out a closet in the kitchen, and convert it to a pantry. The wood for the shelves and the bracing is cut to width, so all we have to do is cut it to length and put it up. She will then paint, which is a shame because I used some nice maple ply for the shelves, and some figured maple for the bracing. I was hoping it would encourage her to use a clear coat. Oh well!

Have a good one!

Scott.

Tonight I'm going to try out my new Woodhaven dovetail jig. Hopefully I can outsmart it. If so, I will spend most of my free time making drawers for the bathroom vanity, kitchen display cabinets, bathroom cabinets, LOMLette's desk, ....................

Tomorrow, we will probably go to the Amish cheese festival in Arthur, Illinois. They have a big furniture auction there. While I'm that close, I will have to go to Arthur Distributing to pick up some drawer slides and other supplies. And since Arthur Distributing is only 1 mile from the little Amish grocery store that sells the best fresh baked cinamon rolls (as long as you get there early enough) we might as well go there too.

Sunday after church, hopefully it will be more drawer making.

Monday, we will probably install some office cabinets that we built and get it measured up for the counter tops. Then, probably more drawer building.

Everyone have fun and be safe this weekend.

Tomorrow gets the last coats of sprayed alkyd enamel on the 4 drawer chest of drawers that I'm losing my shirt on ($600). Prior to that, I need to cut out 2 cabinets (36" wide x 22" tall x 16" deep and same thing but 42" tall). They get painted too.

Also, my wife told me yesterday that she wants me to make a dining room table by November. So, before I swap knives on the jointer and planer, I'll clean up some old reclaimed heart pine and some new SYP to see which one will get eaten on for the Turkey dinner this year. I'm thinking some sort of trestle design (2 leg "assemblies" and no aprons).

Wife did the yard work today (hoo-rah!), so none of that for me. I do need to research why my Echo 2-cycle edger is bogging down at any RPM higher than curb idle.

Church and maybe a nap should round it all out.

Todd, just a quick thought on your Edger. After many years in the Horticulture Biz, I found that if your 2 stroke machines are idling fine, but bog down when you put the throttle to it, it many times was the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler assembly. Take the Muffler apart, and somewhere in there is a small wire mesh screen, designed to arrest sparks so as not to cause a fire. (The US Forest Service had a lot to do with these Spark Arrestors being mandatory) Anyway, due to the oil that is required in the Gasoline Mix for 2 cycle engines, these spark arrestor screens can get carbon deposits on them, and keep the machine from running under load, or at speeds above an idle. This may not be the cause, but I find it to be the culprit many times on 2 cycle engines. Just take the screen out, and discard it. I have seen these Screens get completely clogged up with as little as 40 hours of use on a machine. The worst oil for causing this, IMO, is the "One oil for all ratio's" type..........with the Tanaka Oil being the one I have seen clog them up QUICK. Just an idea for you, it may be something else entirely, but this is where I would start. Good Luck..........2 strokes can drive you nuts at times! :D

Oh, man! Kevin, thanks a bunch for that idea. The spark plug was fine. I took the carbuerator apart, it was fine. The needle valve was fine, the float gasket was fine, the fuel line was fine, the intake fuel filter "felt" and screen were fine, I was baffled. I never thought to check for an output restriction. I'll check it out in the morning. I'll let you know. Todd.

No problem Todd, glad to help. Many times, the spark arrestor is overlooked.........most folks don't even know there is such a critter. After all that you checked, I'll bet that may be it. Weekend for me is shop related, but no Woodworking. :-( I am expanding my workspace, so I need to get rid of a bunch of stuff I no longer have any use for, and do a total rearrange of my shop. I have to make room for 2 Lathes, and relocate some Circuits and my DC. Should make much more room, provide better flow thru the shop when working, and be easier to keep in order.............ya, right! Anyway, I have been wanting to do this for some time, and this weekend will be rainy, so there is no time like the present. The extra room will be nice, can never have enough, it seems. Have an enjoyable and safe Holiday Weekend Everyone! ;)

Everyone please take note that Kevin is officially addicted before he even has the "spinney" things in production!

If it cools off a bit, some yard work (more wood chips to make and spread). Plan on some shop time for a couple keepsake boxes and start milling down more stock for cutting boards. May even take the lathe for a little spin! We have the "Taste of Madison" this weekend and that's an annual event for LOML and myself. Daughter and her two curtain climbers coming in for the weekend, too, so much of the above may turn out to be a wash. Have a fun and safe holiday weekend, all!

I'm with Bob Lasley on getting ready for the BBQ at Terry's. Got some scraps to make into nice flat, straight pieces.

Sneaking in a little work on the almost finished utility cabinet.

The most fun is helping the daughter and wife try to make a couple of girls from Nigeria feel at home. She likes to bring home friends from school who are FAR from home! I think Nigeria qualifies. Sweet gals too!

Darn Jim.................can't get nuttin' by you! :D I have been to my Uncle's Shop a couple of times for some "Spinny Thing" pointers, and I have become totally addicted. It's not my fault.............you guys keep posting pictures of turnings, pens and stuff, so what is a guy to do? I want to make round things too! :p So far, so good with the Lathe Lessons. My Uncle is impressed with my skills so far..............he says I have a knack for it.......chisel angles are correct, things are cutting as they should, and I am getting the hang of it pretty quickly. I do think things are progessing nicely................but I have a LONG way to go. I will be stocking up on turning blanks for practice, practice, practice. Going to set up my Wolverine System this weekend, and get the hang of sharpening the various grinds. My Uncle was kind enough to let me have some gouges to practice on.............he will let me know how they look when I get done with them, and we will see how they cut. I wish I would have gotten a Lathe years ago.............had no idea it was so enjoyable! Maybe in a week or so I can post a picture of my first turning.................no matter what it looks like! :D

Well...I will have the benches finished and put in place for LOML's kitchecn table. You guessed it...more Red Oak for the benches and I will have to get with Bobby Hatfield to get me some more of that 5/4 oak for OLML's chairs.....whenever I figure out just how I'm gonna make EIGHT chairs and have them look ANYTHING like they belong with each other.... :)

I am beginning the work on a CD Corner Cabinet for a guy at work. This will be out of Red Oak plywood edge banded with solid red oak. This little cabinet will house just over 900 music CD's and he already has almost 700 in his collection. He wanted a CD cabinet so he could eliminate the 4 framed wire CD storage units that is scattered about in his living room.

I have some work to get done in preparation for the Central States BBQ at Terry's place and I will be there on Friday afternoon....Clear the highways!!!.....Dennis will be loosed on I-40 Friday afternoon!!!! ;)

Boy! I really appreciate the warning Dennis. You'll come up 540, right? I can get to Terry's without getting on 540 if need be. :p

It will be soooooo good to get folks together again!

Dennis, you need to be finding a chair plan that you can use 5/4 material. Make up your own plan if you can't find one. Simple is quickest. Loose tenon mortise joints would be easier for first time. The material will be strong enough to saw out the leaning back rear leg and route or shape to exact size with a pattern for the piece, then just thinner curved slats bandsawed for the back (2 or 3 each) from the 5/4 stock, may be some hand work involved, like sanding on an OSS to shape. For first time in a hurry chairs, go with simple, square parts. I got this pattern in my head if you need it.....Clear the highways!!!.....Dennis will be loosed on I-40 Friday afternoon!!!!

If a black Silverado with a rebel flag on it passes you on the way - don't worry - it is just me rushing to get a BL.

Now....Ken....that all depends on how fast you are driving. You'll have to be at least over 80 if you are even going to get close to my rear bumper. ;)

See you there my friend.

Good Friday Morning Everyone,
.

So what's happening in your slice of the world this weekend? Hopefully a little sawdust creation.

Have a great weekend and a safe and relaxing holiday!

Bob

I continued my saga with the Sonoma Ironwood that I had enquired about earlier this week here.
Thanks to all for the hints. I made 3 tools from O1 tool steel and managed to get this potpourri bowl out for my buddy's wife.
The lid is not fixed yet in the pic.

Here's a shot of it finished to 1500 grit with no other polish!
An incredibly hard wood!
It's sure dirty to work with. I looked like a Kentucky miner yesterday.

Man Bob, that is Beautiful wood! You sure did it justice...........the Potpourri Bowl is striking. Awesome grain and finish. The wood may have been a struggle to work with, but I think you won! Thanks for posting the picture, it is a pleasure to look at.

I can't believe how far I got with the changing station. I expect to finish all the solid wood pieces and ended up finishing the thing. I'm taking a break now but the next step to to clean the shop so I can start applying the dye. Here's what it looks like now.
