Here's a little Osage Orange bowl I did while waiting on the finish to dry on a couple of the wedding presents. The inside was hollowed out with the hollowing rig. Finish is Tung Oil and GelPoly.

5-1/2" by 4" tall with wall thickness of 1/8"

Great looking bowl Dennis. I like the form on it. How does the osage orange turn? Nice work Dennis.

Nice, the grain in that really looks a lot like the Blue Keyaki I have.

Cheers!

Bernie,

This stuff turns very nice and finishes wonderfully. You have to have sharp tools with this stuff or you'll have a lot of sanding to do. DAMHIKT!!!

The interesting thing is that it's not indigenous to this area. Lewis and Clark brought back some Osage Orange to Thos. Jefferson who had them planted in Philadelphia. Rumor has it, that nearly all of the hedgerows in the area, etc., came from those trees. I don't know just how true that ultimately is, but L&C did have a large mandate for sending back scientific samples as they traveled.

Regarding sanding...one nice thing about this wood is that you can take it up through the grits to a very high sheen without any additional finish, although I have generally put a couple applications of an oil-varnish mixture on it and then buffed.

Well done on the bowl. I have a garage full of OO. Usually trade it or make small turnings, haven't mastered bowls yet. I love turning OO, hard but turns well.

Nicely done Dennis. That was some of he first wood I turned. After the first one, I store the rest of the wood for a time I felt like dealing with the sanding or I got better with the scraper.
