I cut the pith out and painted all ends and burl faces with Anchorseal. I cut the burl part of the pith slabs into pen blanks. I'm not sure if this is Silver Maple or Sugar Maple, but I'm leaning toward Silver.

I'd be afraid of wrecking something that gorgeous. Quite a nature-score!

Great haul Ted! I can relate on both counts - a tree full of maple and a back full of pain. I am sitting here right now with the latter. Heck, I still have a lot of the former, sitting in the burl barn waiting to be turned. Have fun with it.

Did you get to see the leaves? Silver maples have long skinny leaves, where sugar maple leaves a a lot bigger and fatter. Red maples are a little like the sugar maple but smaller.

Now Ted that is a haul. You should be turning for a while.

Bill,
The leaves were juvenile, so I'm not sure. There is another burl covered maple in the same location that did not get removed. Next time I'm at my daughters I'll check that one out. They were the same species. I'll still be checking that one out after every hurricane!

You don't mind working for wood like that.
