My next door neighbor gave me picking rights to a hard maple tree he had taken down. Most of it is sealed and stored as of now. Not much special graining but it is nice wood to turn.

This piece is 5" by 3". I found that the grain changes are real hard to deal with in this type of wood. Tried sanding sealer and it helped a little but any suggestions would be helpful.

I like the trim bead work on it Jim. Nice work.

Jim Becker has posted this as help a couple of times and it works for me, and that is to rub blo on it for the final cut. I don't know what tool he uses, but I use a very sharp scraper and take super fine cuts.

Bowl looks good. I like the bead work around the rim. I have been told by 2 or 3 turners to use a sharp bowl gouge 3/8" with a traditional or standard gring on it for the last few light cuts. It does works.

Yup...I think it looks good too Jim. Sharp tools for grain changes is all I can think of. Think in terms of burls....nothing is consistent....but sharp tools win the day.

Great looking little bowl Jim! I, too, like the detail work around the rim!
