walnut tables w/ pics

Here are three tables that I made for a client using CA claro Walnut. There are ammonite fossils set in the tops. They are finished w/ BLO then a water based ploy. Your feedback is appreciated.

An interesting and disturbing thing happened when I used silicone caulk. I had to rout out the pockets rather deep, as part of the fossil sits rather wide, and lay them in a thicker bed of caulk. Well, as it cured, it sucked the ammonites down into the pocket. I had to repop them, and lay in a thicker coat. Luckily it worked out!:D

Way to go Andy! The strong grain of the walnut really suits the fossils well...like they've been buried under layers of earth. Very nice pieces of walnut you had to work with!

That Claro is some handsome wood. The bookmatch on the coffee table is really well done. I think I would have gone with another section of the crotch figure on the other end table (assuming it was available) for the top. It really grabs your eye. Nice work.

Andy, you picked some fine looking walnut for these. I'm sure the client is going to be very pleased. I'm glad the whole caulk thing worked out for you. That would have made for a bad day :p

Ditto what everyone else said. Very nicely done. Simple to lines to highlight the wood grain. I would have used the two part clear epoxy to set the fossils. I think you have have less problems with them sinking or applying the top coat.

Great looking tables Andy, the walnut is wild! I don’t care for the fossil inlay myself, (I’m sure they were a lot of work) but if the client likes them, that’s all that matters.
