This isn't much of a photo, I can't get a good close up with my cheapo digital camera. But this is a captive ring tool I made from an allen wrench. At some point or if I make a new one I'd shorten it so that it just barely goes past the bend. I do most of the ring with a parting tool and skew, sand it, and just use this to separate it from the spindle. It usually still requires a little sanding on the inside so you can turn a smooth (flat) area about 1 1/2" long, tape some sandpaper around it, and slide the captive ring over it to sand the inside. The commercially available tools probably work better but I think you can turn a smaller ring this way.

Thanks Curt. That is a nice tip. I like the idea of the cut surface being closer to the bend.

I'm going to do some Itty Bitty Hollow Forms this weekend....I think it's time I made a bunch of allen wrench tools. Thanks for the motivation Curt!
