I must confess that I'm actually having a library built into my house, and having someone else do it with more experience and much more time. I am going to have the library done out of cherry to match the hardwood floors. I really like art deco furniture and have decided to have the door panels done in a burl to accent the cherry. My main choices are:

walnut burl
maple burl
madrone burl
sapele pommele

I am going for an overal rich reddish brown look, but don't mind having contrasting or blending panels. Any suggestions?

All of them would work...depending on the project type and style as well as the contrast you want to effect.

Wow, Tod. Those are amazing. But just looking at them makes my wallet lighter. They must cost a fortune.

IMHO, Thuya Burl and Cherry is a killer combo, I use it in turnings and in flat work, especially with curly cherry.

I have some Carpathian Elm Burl that goes really well with cherry. Some is too light with blues and greens, but if you get some of the red it's gorgeous. My favorite, but it isn't a burl, is a very heavily figured Birdseye Maple. Has contrast, but still lots of class. The Makore is close to the color of cherry, the Sapele is going to be darker.

A lot depends on the look your after whether you like contrast or blending woods. Whatever you do, get some large full size samples, same as door panels, small samples will deceive you as to the overall color.

I'm more concerned with matching hues than contrast. The floors have a wide range of red-brown, and the rest of the house cabinets are natural maple. So, I could go with something that fits within the existing red-brown spectrum, or go with a lighter maple burl to bring in the natural maple. I ordered some samples today and will try to see what they look like in real time.

I like the elm burl idea. My local supplier stocks that also. I'll add it to my list.
