Has anyone here had any success fabricating an effective dust collection system for a radial arm saw?

Hello Robert,

Sure, and works well.

What a nice looking set-up! Is the box stationary or does it move with the swing of the arm and/or the blade?
Thanks for the pix.

Robert,

Its stationary.

The amazing thing,

The sawdust is always kicked in to the box

because a RAS is a turret and the table is stationary

as opposed to the problems encountered with a mitre saw.

I have one with a design like Per, but the implementation is embarrasing duct tape (the prototype worked so it has stayed that way for a year or more).

I second the recommendation on how well it works EXCEPT when you say "for this one small cut, I don't need to turn on the dust collector." Then mine carefully deflects at least half of the sawdust directly back at the operator who was too lazy to turn on the DC.

My setup is a "Big Gulp" (MCLS, Sears, Rockler) plastic hood behind the table, hung on the clamping bolts of the table itself.

For ripping I use a small diameter hose attached to the blade guard.

This gets more than 80% of the dust.

This is my Dc hook up although I need to re-hook it up to the system. I extended the system one evening over to the CMS & didn't have a y to hook it up to the RAS too. The rest of the posts are right a RAS is easy to collect dust from. But it works better if you can get closer to the back of the blade housing.

What is a "Big Gulp"? Some kind of shroud made for RAS dust collection?

Not only is it a large, economically priced fountain drink, it is a big pricey, plastic box with a dc hookup port.

Robert

You can see a big gulp here.

I would still make my own because it will work better & won't cost as much. My goodness here is a chance to use up a little scrap.

Thanks for taking the time to find me a link to the Big Gulp. Since the picture doesn't look much like a large economical soft drink, my guess is that it's the pricey plastic DC port Kyle talked about.
Thanks again

Guys-

I have 2 0f the plastic Gulps--one dedicated to the RAS and the other "floating"--mostly applied to the SCMS.

I THINK the cost was uner $17 each --and you can't build one for less than that! Rockler is not the cheapest on things like this.

None of the above apps works perfectly--supplemental DC is in order --especially if you are doing lots of MDF and other foul materials.

Robert,
Came across this the other day:

http://www.cumminstools.com/browse.cfm/4,1860.htm

It's only $4.70, but shipping may make it closer to $14.

Just FYI,
