Decided to try a box and it actually went quite well. No undue excitement or suborbital launches.

It's some Black Walnut from a tree I cut down in the backyard years ago. I cut the piece to ensure a mix of heartwood and sapwood. The void was filled with coffee grounds and CA. It's 4.5" tall by 2" across. The base is hollowed out 2.75" deep.

I found the two scrapers I have were too large for a piece this small so I reground an old Buck 1/2" skew into a box scraper. It works like a charm!

The exterior is finished with John Hart's Secret recipe and buffed with the Beall stuff I just got (hidden gloat)!
I didn't finish the interior since I was in "get it off the lathe in one piece" mode. Next time!

Thanks for looking.

David that is one nice box. I really like the sap wood with the dark. I have 3 walnut bowls with a sapwood swirl on both sides of all three. That is a beauty for your first one.

Very nice . . . the void really adds visual interest . . . and knowing when to quit is half the battle. :)

I like it! Well done, Dave. That little black squiggly feature is cool.

You also realize that we're now expecting you to turn that chunk it's sitting on.

That is really nice, and I like the idea that you made your own tool out of something else, THAT is my kind of recycling!

Cheers!

Purty dang good for a first box David! It's funny, I did one very
similar in Elm not long ago and was gonna post it, but it would
look like I copied you! ;) .
