View Full Version : Dumpster diving for cedar...

Well, not really a dumpster... more like a scrap box! The local "cedar only" lumber yard puts their scrap pieces in large boxes and moves them out to the front of the yard for those who want wood. Most guys take stuff for firewood, but I got a bunch of pieces for small projects. Push sticks, braces, trim, aromatic hanger slats for your closet, boxes etc. Here's my morning "dive" catch.

I went back in the afternoon and got a bunch more, including lots of 3+ feet x 4" boards.

Here is a push tool I made. I kinda like the "old tool" look of the handle. I glued 220 sandpaper to the face and it works well. I'm going to make a bunch more, different styles and sizes.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I'm putting the question where it occurred. I don't see any pictures on this post. I don't think it is the computer because I can see the pictures on this post:

Any suggestions?

Not sure George. We've had some squirels crawling around here affecting the software the last week or two. Seems to be working for me a-ok the last couple of days:)

Just for clairafacation, here is what I see: No red X's, no nothing, just blank space.

Nice score, Greg! Yup, "free" is the best price I know of!!! :D

George, I'm seeing the pics just fine in both, Greg's original post, as well as in your reply. I note that the pics aren't on our SMC server, but rather, on another host. It could be that, if you have some pop-up blocker running on your machine, it's blocking the load from the host server. :)

The pics are stored on Photobucket.com, my regular photo storage site. I can post links to larger pics, and it is sometimes easier to just link rather than make an attachment here.

Greg,
I have a company here that recycles copper wire. It comes in on huge spools. After they strip the wire off the spools, they break em down. I get the center slats by the truckload. After running them through the planer to get the "curve" off, I end up with 1"+ pine from 22"-42"L. I currently have about 500-600 bf piled up. The downside is it beats up the blades alot if I don't wire brush the slats first.

John,

That's a nice stash of wood!

I just got my planer mounted on the Rigid MSUV. Will be nice to see it in action and do it's thing on some of the longer cedar pieces I've picked up.
