Here is some of the Hard Maple I have been getting. This one is loaded with curl a lot of it don't show in the pics. This is some great wood to turn and sanding is Great! Easy to get a smooth as glass finish.
It has a Ebony Collar and stands at 6 1/2" Tall X 4 1/2" wide.
Finish is Gel Poly and buffed with the Beall.

Jim...........I really like that hollow form.....Can you turn a small HF like without any special tools...........IOW...can it be done with a bowl gouge...spindle gouge.....scraper?

That is cool! I bet it looks twice as nice in person. That knotty section looks cool on the blonde wood. When you do a collar on a piece like that Jim, do you at that later or is it glued on to your blank when you start? Beautiful piece!

Thanks All!

Ken,
I use a Bowl gouge for the outside and a homemade Captured Hollowing Rig for the inside. Can it be done? Im sure it can, but I would sugest getting some kind of hollowing tool, using the proper tools for the job makes It much safer and fun!;)

Corey,
I do My collars last, It can be done both ways but I dont take a chance of messing up my work by a slip up of the gouge.

Jim,
While I am amazed by your ability to carve such a graceful form from a spinning block of wood, that you are at the same time sensitive enough to the unique life of that wood to let it speak through a rough and relatively untouched part of itself, shows me that you are an artist who truly respects and honors his media.

I thank you Jim.
