At least high craft if not art. I'm starting to explore some more of the artistic styled bowls and want to start carving, embellishing, and otherwise messing up my turnings. Here's my latest try.

Spalted Maple
Turned and Carved
7" diameter by 3 1/4" high
Danish Oil, Wax, Black Gesso Rim

A demonstrator at our club a couple of months ago said the differance between art and craft was that art is usually a one of a kind thing where craft is when you do several of the same, like pens, bottlestoppers etc.

with that deffinition I have a BIG pile of art out in my shop

Nice bowl with a nice edge/lip/rim!

This bowl has a good curve to it which I find very pleasing. I think you are on the right track. Keep it up and you will find something that will make your work stand apart from all the others, yep that is one thing art should do.

Someone should tell Sam Maloof that ;)

I think the big diff is what you pay/charge for it :D

Don't matter if you want to call it Art, Jim, or Bob, that is one nice bowl!

Cheers!

I looked at this bowl for a good long time. Here's my take.....If you had made a bowl that had flaws in craftsmanship and then included the carving...it may have appeared accidental. but because the bowl is so well done, your lip treatment and carving is striking with its contrast and complimentary to the rest of the piece. Nicely done Raymond.:)

Great job!

What is a black gesso rim?

Black gesso is a paint artists use to seal canvases. I painted the rim then went back and carved the hash marks in it.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I appreciate your support and thoughts.

Very nice, Raymond. Both art and very functional.

Very nice Raymond!
I'm glad to see you're putting your sharp pointy stick to good use :D

The rim treatment goes very nicely with the wood of bowl. I think what really caught my eye was initially thinking the carving was symetrical but it's not but it is ... really held my interest.

I agree with the others Raymond. That rim really tops that bowl off.
