.......... not to laugh, well not to laugh TOO hard.....:o

Maybe a bit of a dumpy bottom....

36412
I did not bother sanding or finishing it, there was so much tear-out and I was getting some big catches....

36413
...big catches always seemed to happen on this CA filled crack, really annoying.....

36414
..... but I wanted to get one off the lathe in one piece, so I gave up making is super smooth, and settled for in one piece.

36415
I did a jam chuck and took off the bottom tenon, even did a recess in the bottom.

The bowl is just under 5" wide by about 2 1/2" tall, the wood is Sakura (Japanese Ornamental Cherry) walls are a little less than 1/4".

This is a save, as this piece was the one that I did not think I could save, and glued it up, the cracks were kind of scary, as I was thinking it could explode at any time, "Light cuts, Light cuts!" was my mantra :D

All in all great fun, learned a bunch, and got to use the new chuck, beats watching TV any night of the week!

Cheers!

PS thanks for not laughing too hard, I'll do better, promise! :D

Looks pretty good to me compadre! Hopefully the next one you won't be fighting cracks and enjoy the process more! Nice grain in that Sakura!

Stu, looks great to me, I can only hope my first bowl will be as nice.

Thats a down right first class job!!!:)
I've found a little very light scraping with a super sharp scraper will reduce tear out. When I sharpen I try to raise a "Burr" on the edge. There's a lot of arguement about burrs, but it seems to work for me, and I need all the help I can get.

I say well done Stu. It looks like you got the hang of it pretty well to me, especially the form. Don't sweat the finer points, you can work on those on the next one;)

Good job, Stu!

Don't sweat that crack: remember that Rule #1 for photographing stuff for this forum is
"It's my camera, and I'll decide which angle to take the picture from!":D

Dumpy bottoms help it not to roll over....

Looks good..next time practice your sanding and finishing even if you dont keep it. that way you know what to do if you make one you really like.

Nice bowl

Hey Stu that bowl looks great. You should have sanded it anyway just for practice. Looks mighty good to me.

Just get it off the lathe in one piece - yeah, I know that feeling!!!
Great job!! They say it gets easier - we'll see ;)

Looks nice and, like Ken said, that wood has great grain!

Now get started on number two, three, four, ...

McGiver,

Pretty soon you will have a mini lathe in the liquor store for slow times.

Great job on the bowl.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh, sorry,:D i was just kidding. it's actually a very nice bowl. If it didn't finish well, don't worry, not many of us can say our first one did turn out the best. Date the bottom and keep it. in two years, put it up to what you are doing then. If it's the same, then you have to worry

That's a great bowl Stu and I really like the smoothly contoured recess in the bottom. No laughing here.

Stu,
No need to apologize for the dumpy bottom on that bowl; after all, your hands are large enough to hold it up, and, it will hold more soba!
Also Stu, while the grain of the bowl is beautiful, the crack is nice too.
