Recently use some stranded copper wire but stainless steel fishing leader is supposed to be great and long lasting. The copper seems to have a short life after reaching the temperatures developed on oak.

I have been using old guitar strings. A guy I work with gives me his old sets of strings. There should be 6 per set, and if you can find a guy with a 12 string then you hit gold! I am sure we have a few musicians around here that could send you a pair or two of old ones.
Of course be sure to use something other than your fingers to hold them.

I take 2 dowels (maybe 3/4 thick) and drill a hole through the middle of each pieces NOT longways but sideways to make handles. Thread through a piece of picture wire (the kind you hang pictures with) and staple it to the dowel. The wire has different thicknesses and can be simply reattached should it break. DAMHIKT :-)
Have fun and make some smoke.
