Hi Steve

Here is one I made back in '97 I think, maybe '96. It was for the Lafayette College student government. Sorry for the picture quality, it was a long time ago.

<img src="http://www.enter.net/~ultradad/gavel1.jpg">

Gavel and box and striker all made from the same cherry boards.

The head is turned out of Purple Heart & the handle is Maple the Gavel plate is Madrona. The finish is several coats of wax rubbed in at smokin high speed .

Here's one I made about a year ago out of some Bois d' Arc that I cut down on my back property fence line.

Thanks for the pictures as well as the links. What I also find interesting is that Mr. Grumbine has done some "flatwork" and it looks mighty darn impressive.

Hey Steve,

The latest issue of Woodworkers Journal has an article in it on making Gavels.

It shows Beyy S. turning one

Mr. Grumbine does a lot of flat work...he makes his living from woodworking and recently added a Mini Max combo machine to his arsenal.

Hey Steve, Your question is real timely for me. Believe it or not I sat in a lodge which was not my own last night and the gavel I used was home turned. I looked at it long and hard, and will probably turn one for my home lodge since we have one that constantly looses its head

Hi Steve

What Jim said. I actually bought my first lathe so I could turn all sorts of table legs and chair legs for all the furniture I would be building when I started my business back in 1993. Little did I know what was waiting for me! I still build furniture, but the lathe keeps taking more and more of the business time. I've upgraded all my tools at least once or twice, but I have gone through 10 lathes since I started! :eek:
