This 18 in. wide X 6 in. spalted magnolia had such interesting figure in it I decided t fill in the crack with crushed malachite and thin CA glue on the outside and coffee grounds on the inside of the bowl. This bowl had been turned in 2004, and coated with Anchorseal, put away to slowly dry, but as you can see I don't live in a perfect world. It has 2 coats of tung oil primer, 2 coats of tung oil solution, and multiple coats of lacquer...all hand rubbed when needed between the coats with synthetic steel wool 0000 grade. The signature is written with an archival 05 pen. Thanks for looking, your comments as always will be appreciated.

Holy cow, Glenn!!! That's just gorgeous! :) I'm really glad you left the bowl with simple lines and allowed the wood to "speak" for itself. Wonderful form and finish. :) Just beautiful! :)

I can see myself in it! That is a spectacular looking bowl. You take sow's ears and turn them literally into silk purses. I am always amazed at the creative and decorative saves that you are able to do, Glenn. Congrats!

Hi Glenn,

Another great looking bowl. In a case like this do you check the bowl with a moisture meter to see what the moisture content is before you turn it or just figure that after 2 years it should be dry enough?

Another beautiful piece by the talented Mr. Hodges.

I saw that title and have had the Grateful Dead song Sugar Magnolia stuck in my head all day long.

Chris, no moisture meter needed after 2 years of drying. I could have turned this one after one year of drying, but I have a lot of roughed out bowls drying. With this title I guess all of you can tell I was born and bred in a Georgia briar patch...true to my Southern roots. I appreciate all the gracious and kind accolades about this bowl. It is a pleasure being a member of forum with such fine people, but if you see something in my work where I have made a mistake or I could do something to improve it please let me know for I am always trying to improve.
Thanks,

I read your post asking for someone to point out some mistakes or ways to improve this bowl. Well I went back and looked at the picture again and I sure can't find any room for improvement. I'm not a huge fan of lacquer on bowls but that finish brings out so much in that wood it probably serves it better than an oil finish could. That's just one darned pretty bowl!

Thanks for your gracious and kind remarks Curt, and I would like to add that the bowl had 4 coats of Southerland Wells tung oil (2 of tung oil thinner, and 2 of my regular tung oil solution) before I sprayed any lacquer. The tung oil was semiglossy and smooth to the touch before I began spraying. Thanks again, Curt.
