Putting a finish on edgebanding

Am I correct in assuming that people generally put a finish on edgebanding (mine looks unfinished)? Do you use whatever you use on the rest of the panel? Are any types of finish bad for the glue-on edgebanding (e.g. can they dissolve the glue)?
