I've got the Veritas MKII power (sorry, purist neanders  ) sharpener. I found some cow hide that is exactly the thickness for the honing platter. I cut it to shape. The compound that I have been using (on MDF and "still" leather) is the green stuff from Lee Valley. It has little oil or binder in it. Is there a trick to getting it to stick to the spinny leather in a somewhat even coverage? It works without being even, but it would be nicer if a lot of it didn't just fall off in handling. I've wondered about using oil, but don't want to mess up the leather disc.

There are compounds with binder in them, but I have a lifetime supply of the green compound. :o

david, when i first charge a leather covered wheel i pulverize the compound, soak the leather with oil then press the compound in by hand. it`ll take a bit of sharpening before it all evens out but after you`ve spun it a while it`ll lay down and give you a fantastic edge...02 tod

I use meniral oil to load my wheel then apply abrasive like Tod. I try to smear it around good with my fingers before I use the wheel to sharpen.

Thanks guys! That's what I'll do. Humidity seems to be causing my disk not to sit flat like it did at first anyway. A bit of oil will soften it back out.

I use something similar as a motorized honing plate, this being a 9" disc sander (part of my belt sander grinder jig). For this I made a leather disc using chamois leather glued to a velcro-backed sanding disc. This charges up very easily and works wonderfully.
