Wasn't planning on posting these, but Mark's NE piece, which is also Hickory, inspired me to show what happens to the good looking stuff (like he had) when it's been sitting around for a while (like I have).

First up is a bowl that's about 10" across and 4" tall. The raw blank was easily twice that size but this is all that was left once the really yucky gunk got removed. Oh! Yucky gunky stuff is fun to remove on the lathe!

And next up is a small end grain hollow form that reminds me of an Apollo Capsule. It's 4" tall and 6" wide. Pretty gnarly on the inside, but was fun to do.

Both suffered through the same finishing process - Arm-R-Seal and Beall.

Good Stuff Andy.....................Even if the Capsule is gnarly on the inside.

Very nice Andy.

I can't help thinking that the little piece would make the classiest pencil holder I've ever seen! The bowl is great - I'm definately a sucker for spalted wood.

I'm taking a time out from turning until this latest bunch of snow melts!

Geez...Now I feel terrible. The NE I made out of your spalted hickory looks like someone handed an axe to gorilla compared to that!! Beautiful work Mr. Hoyt!

The really sad part of all this is that you guys have demonstrated that my photo editing skills are better than my turning skills.!

Thanks!

Andy this is a fantastic piece, even if I can't see it! I am still having trouble with some posts but, knowing that you turned it, it must be great!

Lookin' good Andy! I find working with most spalted woods to be a challenge (tearout). Looks like you handled it well.

Thanks for the pictures!

"Looks" is the operative word; since you can't look inside. As I said, really gnarly - tearout city!

And Fried is right - a pencil holder is about all she's good for.

Nonetheless - thanks!

Both good looking pieces, nice photography, and interesting wood. Have you considered turning the bowl upside down and hanging the hollow from it so the bowl would look like the re-entry chute for the Apollo capsule?
