This is the other half of the log from a bowl I turned a while back (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=29966&highlight=Hickory).

This Hickory seems to be very unique. As I told about this tree before, a lot of years ago it was pushed over with a dozer during some construction on my FIL's farm. The tree continued to grow - parallel with the ground for about 6 feet, then turned up. I only got a few good pieces out of it and the bark is extremely thick and the wood is very soft. I harvested another Hickory that was wind-damaged and it was hard as concrete compared to this one.

It looks like there is some tearout and such, but it's just a color variation in the wood. It sanded out very smooth with little effort.

6-3/4" max OD
5" tall at the peak
3/8" wall thickness

Oh Mark I usually don't like NE bowls that much but I love this one! I really like the contrast between the light grain and the dark bark. I also like the fact that the rim is fairly level which is hard to get on a NE. Great Job!

That is a pretty one. The contrasting colors really set it off!

Just as pretty as the other one Mark. So, do you still have the twin? Bet they'd look real cool in the same room!:)

Very nice!

I liked the first ones too but this one seems even nicer. Like Sparky said, there is a nice contrast between the bark/sapwood and the lighter heartwood - this one seems to have a little less sapwood than the earlier one and it makes it more of an edge treatment.

Does the fairly level NE mean it came out of a log with a very large diameter?

Nope. It went to my FIL recently as a birthday gift. He was so anxious to see what these bowls ended up looking like that I gave him the better of the two (IMO).

The log/trunk was probably 12" in diameter, but was very uneven and hard to describe. I guess the odd shape was from growing "sideways".

You guys really wanna get teased??? I sent Travis Stinson a fairly good-sized chunk of this wood to see what he can do with it... Dennis Peacock also has a piece or two of it... so stay tuned... :D

That's a beauty, Mark. All of you eastern/southern type folks with all the great trees growing in your neck of the woods really make me jealous.
