Well, here's a lil 'ol chunk of wood that's gonna see the world.
You first saw this item here (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=31460), when George Conklin sent it to me out of sheer kindness. George - this blasphemer thanks you! Then you saw a tease of it here (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=33645). And then last night you saw it here (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=30455). And one day in the near future you'll might even see it posted somewhere in this maze (http://www.ablett.jp/). Like I said, this wood gets around!
Anywho, thought I'd do a proper post so you can laugh at it some more in one central location.
It's Velvet Mesquite (so I'm told and have no basis for an arguement, so that's what it is). It started out as a full-round-with-the-bark-on centerwork piece about 12" long and 5" in diameter. Ended up being 8" tall and 4½" in diameter with the pith dead on in the middle. The walls are about 1/8" thick, but the hollowing only went about two thirds of the way down (right where it becomes solid heartwood) due to tool limitations.
The stuff was fun to turn. Freshly cut the sapwood is white and then five minutes later it goes potato on you and turns yellow. Makes really nice curlies. Has a bit of BLO on it followed by three coats of steel-wooled Arm-R-Seal and the Beall.
Thanks again, George. I had fun.
