Well... Found out the other day that there will be a new addition to our family. First kid is now in the oven so I figure there's no better time than now to figure out what I want to build for a crib. I was looking at the Heirloom Crib that both Rockler and PlansNow sell, but I would like to get some other ideas as well. If you all could help me out and post some pics of the cribs you have built, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've done 2. The first was a Rockler 3 in 1 made from oak.

The second is my design stole ideas from different pictures it also converts to a day bed and full bed it was made with maple.

Both of these were made using this wonderful jointer which is FOR SALE!!!

Greg - that is a great piece. Love the versatility. I've thought of making cribs before but was daunted due to the lack of usable age group. Your project is the perfect solution.

The only problem I see is that my slat work would not compare with your terrific work. Beautiful job.

Here's a link to the crib I made for our first granchild. The plans were from American Furniture Design.

Sorry I don't have a picture, but I have another design idea. I am actually in a similar boat as you. My wife is pregnant and we are expecting our first child Oct 1st. :D (Very excited) :D LOML likes the classic sleigh crib look. We found a website www.sleighcribplans.com (http://www.sleighcribplans.com) that has plans for 2 different cribs. So I will be starting our crib in a fews weeks.

Thanks everyone for the pics so far. I do like the idea of the crib being able to convert into a day bed, and then a twin bed, but the more I think about it... that's two less reasons for me to be in the shop and also two less possible reasons for me getting new tools. So I'm thinking I'm going to stick with strictly a crib for now. Please keep the pics coming!

Thanks.

Jeremy,
Don't sell yourself short by thinking that you would be eliminating possible projects by combining these into one project. There will be far more projects than you will have time for in the future for the little one. All of which will require more shop time and tools!!! There will be things like toy boxes, bookshelves, little table and chairs and many more. Also remember the heirloom factor. When your little one comes home from college and eventually has a little one of his or her own that one could use the same crib/daybed/full bed as the parent did.

I suppose your right! There will be many projects other than the crib that I will have to do for the little one. And actually, there always seems to be something that comes up to where I can't get into the shop to finish a project so they always take a lot longer than expected. I should still be able to get some more tools by using the good ol' "I NEED this to build this project" excuse.

I know there are a lot more people here that have built cribs though... I've seen a couple by doing the search on the site, but I'm hoping there are some more that I haven't seen yet! Please keep the pics coming!

I am also in the same boat except my wife is due at the end of May!!. I have already built the cradle (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?p=335299#poststop) though so that gives me an extra 3-5 months to make the crib. A change table is next though. The crib that I will be building will be my own design but will look something like this (http://ww2.potterybarnkids.com/cat/pippopup.cfm?gids=f1041&type=viewlarge&lid=256&src=pipab|cfrncrb|gf1041|k|rshop_b|s/shpab|cfrncrb|da|rshop_b) except not painted white.

Be sure to keep us updated on your project.

Here's the crib I built for my grandaughter. It also survivied her brother. I also made a matching dressing table for it.

http://home.earthlink.net/~us71na/crib3.jpg

It is made of Maple with a cherry top rail finished with Deft semi-gloss clear wood finish.

Make sure you get the mattress before you start to insure that your crib will fit tight to the mattress. Not all crib matresses are created in teh same size and you don't want any gaps around the mattress at all. Also be sure to check your design for the proper safety features such as rail spacing, posts sticking up, etc.
