I am meeting my sawyer tuesday to show him the logs I plan to have sawn up. What is the best way for me to estimate the total board feet out of a log? For instance, I have a 24" diameter (measured from bark edge to bark edge) maple that is 15 feet long. What would that yield?

Thanks!

Hank,

This board foot calculator should work for you. I understand the International scale is the most accurate, and accounts for 1/4" kerf. The sawmill is probably a bandmill, so the yield should be even better.

Just to add to what Ted posted, measure the log inside the bark at the small end. A thin kerf bandsaw should cut a little over the International scale.

Don't know about the international scale, but usually the diameter of the small end of the log is used in the calculation. Dick B.

I've got a scale sheet I carry in my billfold. Its about wore out.
You'll have to measure inside the bark
