Well here is my first ever goblet and first thing turned on the new lathe. It is ash and walnut, 7 1/2" tall and 3" wide. I got the walls down to 1/8". It is finished with EEE-Ultra Shine and Mylands Friction polish. Then a couple of coats of lacquer. The LOML said when I parted it off my eye's got as big as silver dollars. I guess because it came of intact and one piece. Let me know what ya think.

Nice one Bernie. And I'm glad to see you getting that new machine dirty.

And I'm amazed at that wood. I knew Ash and Walnut had been grafted by Lee DR out in balmy California; but never expected it to grow well enough in Kansas what with your winter climate and all. Congrats to your arborist for getting the two species to grow so straight with pefectly aligned grain.

Well Done!

Thanks for the comments. This was a real learning experience but had a lot of fun.

By the way Andy out here in the flatlands we call that tree WalAsh. Pretty common. :p

Hi Bernie,

Tht is a very nice piece! And, it is WAY better than my first goblet, which looked a lot like and old oil can.

Nice work bernie, I have never tried to turn a goblet that way but it appears that it worked for you. By the way the next time you come to Denver I will take a cord of that WalAsh that you have common in your area if you can bring it in :D

Ron I just had it that way with a jam chuck to finish the bottom. Also I would bring you a cord of the WalAsh but it is getting kinda rare here so they won't let us harvest any. :p
