When I was a kid, my grandparents and parents gave us toys like magnifying glasses, prisms, kaleidescopes, colored lenses, whistles, bells, chimes, bird-calls and many other things of that sort. All made for kids, with kid-sized grips; sturdy, not breakable; no sharp edges. My brother and sisters and I spent hours playing with them, never even imagining how much we were learning. If anyone can tell me of stores (online or "brick and mortar") where I can find stuff like that, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

That brings back memories, I had one uncle that always gave great gifts that were mostly mechanical/electrical (battery) like walkie talkies, morse code sets, erector sets and other things that we loved but also learned from.

A lot of malls have the "Discovery Channel Store" which is great for that sort of thing. They are also online at:

John,
I still see erector sets in the stores and microscopes and the best of all, chemistry sets!!
Try the large department stores, Macys, Gimbles etc. in store or online.
