I would ditto the others. Try using a dye and experiment on scraps. Poplar can be funny sometimes especially if you have lots of green tint in it.
I normally stay away from it on stain projects for just that reason. I have had good luck using a sealcoat of dewaxed shellac and then stain on other woods to control blotching. Should work here as well.
