I have been honored by being ask to build a memorial flag box for a close friend who passed away. I don't have any plan or idea of the size of box to build and looking for some help with a pattern, etc.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Dennis,

I was given a flag when my father passed. I have never looked at it or opened it until now.

Its outside dimensions are 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" x 23" and is 3" thick.

The size of the box depends on the flag size of course and how cleanly it can be folded. The box says "Spartacraft".

I checked and they have a web site

http://www.spartacraft.com/index.html

Maybe you could get some ideas here.

Good luck with the project.

Cheers,

Kent

Here was my take on a flag box

http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=21378

They turned out well and I like the enlarged base which allowed an engraved nameplate. I've moved since then so all my stuff is packed away, so sorry I can't help with dimensions. The cases are about 1200 miles away too, so I can't measure either!

I did go to the wood store and bought shorts for a discount on the wood. I think getting the glass cut and the nameplates were way more than the wood cost!

Scott Spencer built a nice flag case. Check out his posts and also the related subject posts at the very bottom of this thread.

It is important that you finish the inside of the flag box with several coats of shellac. Without the shellac, acids in the wood can significantly shorten the life of the flag. Do not use one-part poly. Apparently, it has additional problems from the point of view of fabric conservation.

Corey Pretty straight forward. I think I started out using the Wood Mag plans then deviated from there.

That IS a fine looking box. As always when this subject comes up, I'll suggest having the flag in your posession BEFORE making the box, and have it folded by some proud honor guard members. A sloppily folded, 'loose in the box' flag looks bad, IMO.

Last Summer at the Arkansas BBQ Dale Lenz showed one of his cases. You might contact him and see what dimensions he uses. His contacts are : 918 458-9224 or dalelenz@hotmail.com
