I have a grizz 8" Jointer. I am using the original knives. It is now time to get a second set. I am looking for opinions on which knives to buy. Best I can tell from Grizzly site I need 8"x1"x1/8". Any suggestions?

My replacement blades came from Hartville Tool and appear to be a better quality steel than the originals. Amazon usually carries Freud blades.

Dwayne,

Before I purchased my jointer I did my homework on replacement blades in addition to all of the other pros and cons. I have found that Freud makes alot of replacement knives and I have read where people are satisfied with teh quality and price. If they don't have your exact size in stock Charles tells me that they will cut them down for free for you (length that is).

I did some checking and the Freud C480 (8" x 1" x 1/8" Jointer Knives) fits your Griz. Amazon has them for ~$26 at the moment.

If you want to see the entire Freud line go here (http://www.freudtools.com/woodworkers/rep/other/planer_jointer_knives/html/planer_jointer_knives_1.html)

I purchased a replacement set for my 6" jet from "Global tooling". I haven't had them very long, but so far they cut very good.

I got quick service from them.
I got the information about Global from here at the "Creek". The comments were very positive.

Thanks for the responses. I was searching last night and found Freud c480 for 24.74 and 1.00 shipping.

I am thinking of ordering a set. I hesitate because the woodworking show will be here this weekend and I am thinking about waiting to see if I can find some.

Dwane, you are killing me man. I went to the site just out of habit of clicking links and then I rememberd that I have a $5 off coupon for there. Not that its your fault but a mere thanks for helping to add to the bit collection :)

Hi, I have purchased a set of knives for my Delta 37-190 jointer from a place called Titon tool works. They call their knives T1, which stands for tungsten and the knife is supposed to have 18 percent of T in it. I don't know if this is going to be better than my original knives which is case hardened. But the price was only 1/3 of what I could buy orig. Delta knives for. I am getting ready to install them pretty soon, and then we'll see if it was worth it. Good luck with your search.

Dwayne,

With regard to the aformetioned Global Tooling, they also sell carbide tipped blades. Being lazy and not enjoying sharpening all that much, I sprung for a set of these a couple of months ago. They only list 3 knife sets on their web site, but will gladly sell you four, if you happen to have a four knife cutter head like my Griz 586. (Infinity will NOT do this.) If I recall, they charged me around $125, which was actually less per blade than if I had bought only three (never did figure that one out!). As I have not run them enough, the jury is still out on whether I made a wise investment. I have run a fair amount of hard maple over them however, and they have performed well so far with no noticeable dulling. My Griz blades would have been dull long ago. They claim as much as ten times the usage between sharpenings, but I'm not holding my breath on that claim.:D Downside is, I will have to send them out for resharpening. (I've checked a few places and estimate it will cost around $50.) After I've used them longer, I can report on whether it's a wise investment or not. If the cost works out close to what standard steel blades would run for the same amount of board feet, I will consider them a success, as I would rather be working with wood, than sharpening and changing out jointer knives.
