Hey all. I won't bore you with 32 posts, but I wanted to gloat over this bishop which I did on Sunday. I am REALLY a rookie and it took me over an hour to do this 1 piece. I figure that I'll get faster before too long...especially after doing 2 or 3 of the 16 pawns. BTW, this is poplar, or tulip tree. Firewood from a tree in my backyard. No finish applied yet because I want to experiment on scrap first. Then I will finish and part off the block that goes in the chuck.

Thanks for letting me share.

Tim, nice work but let me ask you, isn't that the Kings Throne he's sitting on?

Wow! That came out great! If you didn't tell me what it was I would have known! Definately post the rest as you go - OK, maybe just a group shot of all those pawns!

I don't venture over here too much since the vortex is so strong:D , but I'm glad I did. Are you working from patterns or just "by eye". I would love to see how you do the other pieces. Pleas add the rest as you go.

Thanks all !

For Mark (and anyone else for that matter):
Yes, I am working from patterns. Here is a link that I found:
http://www.shopsmithhandson.com/archives/nov_dec00/html/money_maker.htm
But I also have that in an old "Hands on" book that Shopsmith gives out at demos. The nice thing about the ".jpg" files at the web page though was that I could do "save as" onto my PC, then insert them into a Powerpoint slide and print. They came out at 100% size. The downside is that the vertical centerline on some of the pictures is not really in the center...you'll see. I cut and folded at the midpoint to mark the wood. Then unfolded so I could measure the transitions with a caliper.

Will post more pics as the set develops.
Thanks and regards,
Tim B.

Tim,
Thanks for the link. I have often wondered about turning a chess set, but couldn't figure out the knight. That offset stuff looks a little scary, but I just might have to give it a try. Looking forward to seeing the completed set.
