Hi,

I need to make a few hundred dowels for some knockdown furniture, anyone knows any simple way of making them ?

Thanks for your time.

You can make any diameter dowel you want with a round over bit with the appropriate radius and a table mounted router, feather bord & fence. Four passes are required for each dowel. You can make nearly any length you want and use any wood you want.

Thanks for your replies.

I need to make a few hundreds of them and will need to make them often, is there any automated way of doing this.

The one from lee valley is about the best manual machine I've seen. Now for the question???? How much do you want to spend, how big of a dowel do you need and how automated do you want to be. ( back to the money question)

Kenneth,

I am willing to spend from $500 to $1500 for it. Am looking for dowels of diameter 8 mm and length upto 45 mm maximum.

I was thinking of something where we can just feed the wood on one end and get the job done.

Thank you !

You are talking about a dowel milling machine - see pic below for the type of thing. I have no idea wher you would fine one in the US - try a google on that search term. Suspect that it is gonna be more than your budget to buy the machine but if you find someone who has one already they may be happy to make to your spec

If you're doing this in volume, you might consider subbing it out to a manufacturer like Chicago Dowel (http://www.chicagodowel.com/).
