know it isn't exactly woodworking, but here it is anway!

Last fall when I was hunting deer at my dad's place, I found a Box Turtle Shell in the woods and brought it back to his house. We started talking about turkeys and turkey hunting in the spring and my dad started talking about how th e first slate calls came about and that the Indians or settlers or somebody put shale or slate inside a turtle shell and used a stick to make turkey sounds. Well, my uncle told dad that he was full of it and that you couldn't make a call with a turtle shell. So, since my dad knew that I make pot-style slate calls with turned wood and slate & glass that he would give me a project and have me make one with the turtle shell. Well, here it is - the slate is a piece of roofing slate - it is a bit crude , but that is what he wanted!

It really sounds good - it has a Low Raspy sound.

Kurt,
Looks good. Down here in West Tennessee, these types of calls are pretty common.
Maybe it's a southern thang!
