Just playing with the new chuck and bowl gouge yesterday, flinched or sneezed or something while working on the inside bottom and caught the side of the tool on the rim:
34643
The encouraging thing is that the sides are a fairly consistent 1/8" most of the way down. Can't feel too bad about it: this is another chunk of the "Jurassic redwood" 4x4 that the OzzyBonker came out of. It's dry, I mean like "picked up off the ground in Death Valley" dry, and falls somewhere between balsa and styrofoam on the structural-integrity scale.

Looking forward to trying this with better wood.

I was about to say that it looked like the wood was very soft.
Looks like you getting the hang (pun intended) of it.

I was about to say that it looked like the wood was very soft. You misspelled "VERY": I'm sitting here carving my initials in the side with my thumbnail.:p

LOL. Had I kept all my turnings, which ended up like that, I'd have a hard time finding a path to my lathe!!! :o But hey, it's all a learning experience, right? :)

Lee I think you got it my friend. Can it be glued? Just curious. Looks like fairly soft wood. I also have had my share of funnels and mishaps. Keep on trucking. You are doing fine.

Watching TV while turning is what usually does it for me:D If you didn't blow one up occasionally then you wouldn't have these stories to tell:) Keep the wood spinning!

My first box attempt look very similar last night. I guess you can only crank so hard on the tailstock!

Lee - rechuck it and continue. It's called practice for a reason.

Lee I think you got it my friend. Can it be glued? Just curious. Looks like fairly soft wood.Naw, there's a piece missing somewhere in the garage, and it's not worth the trouble: like trying to turn a styrofoam coffee cup. Like I said, just fooling around/practice.

Lee that's the advantage of turning in a cold climate. A constant stock of kindling/firewood. Course their kinda short and burn real quick but kinda nice and light.
