View Full Version : Large Cherry Bowl

This is probably the largest bowl I've done. Made from a 10X10X6 piece of cherry..it is 9.5" in diameter and 5" high. Quite a challenge and I'm afraid that I didn't get it sanded to perfection like I should have. I may still attack it again. It's finished with Clear Cut Shellac (3 coats) and steel wool. I think I'd like to put some more work into the sanding but stay with the matte finish. Sorry about the pics...just to busy tonight to mess with the photo booth.:)

Very nice bowl there John.....but THAT DOES IT!!!!! I'm stuck doing flat work and my lathe is crying in the shop due to all the other tools getting attention.:o :(

I like the shape and rim detail on this one John. Very nice work. Now....how about one that's 18" across? :D

Nice! Rim detail is sedate yet adds a ton of flair. Well done!

Heck I am climbing over my old John Deere----which is getting a deck rebuilt.
Have you seen the cost of bearings lately---gee. Got so much stuff in the way I don't dare start anything big right now. But the last of the parts should be here on friday and then maybe I can get a big on turned this weekend.

REALLY, REALLY, REALLY nice bowl, John. Wow. You keep this great work up and that guy in the other thread will post pictures of you in a wooden thong.

John, this form is very pleasing to the eye, I think the wood and finish is. Please post us another picture when you have a chance.

NIce form, John, the rim detail is cool. Approximately how much time would you spend sanding a bowl like this? Seems I take way too long.

Thanks everyone! Ed, I take a lot of time too. I spent a couple hours on this and got the outside looking fine. The inside requires more attention though. Problem is, it's mostly by hand. One little tool mark can cost you a half hour of sanding!

Very nice Mr. Hart! I like it. I have to ask, what do you do with all these bowls etc. you turn? You sell them, give them away, stash them in a John Hart museum? Just curious as you said in another thread you have turned 130 pieces in the last year, not including pens! Incredible.

Thanks again everyone. The rim was just a spur of the moment idea. Stuck the point of the skew in and rolled around, then stuck it in the other way and rolled around to the other side. 10 seconds and I was happy.:)

Corey....I have bowls and vases laying all over the house...even the ones that cracked or split or look crappy. I've given a couple dozen away. Last week, my sister in law was visiting and she was all googly-eyed, so I just said, "take some". That was pretty fun.:)
