Small haul at Woodcraft today!

Wife and I took the daughter back to school today. As we are 100 miles from Woodcraft, I use that for an excuse for a quick trip. No big tools, but felt like I acquired some anyway!

Woodcraft online is running some Whiteside bits at about 50% off. They are a couple of small rail and stile sets and the small panel raisers. I had wanted a smaller set for some time and love Whiteside! One salesman told me that he didn't think they would match online close outs and he couldn't find the two sets I wanted anyway. About that time the manager came in said he had missed me (he forgot to say "and my money", but we both knew it was implied :) ). When I showed him the page from Woodcraft's site, he checked the 'puter. Sure 'nuff he had two of each in stock! He said "we can't let the guy order from the net" and gave me the sale price. The original salesman just thought they should have been boxed, which they likely should have, and didn't check the bags.

In the discount tray I spotted the old diamond sharpening kit. In the process of looking in the catalog to find the grits included we found a new kit offered. It has 6 pastes, down to .5 micron. It also includes a diamond hone, a small piece of plate glass, the typical MDF pads with labels for the grit, a non slip pad and the oil. It may still be higher than you could put together separately, but at $20 less than the old kit ($49), with larger quantities of diamond and more accessories, it pushed my lust button and came home with me.

I picked up a Fisch brad point drill that looks mean and a 1/2" plug cutter and all the odds and ends I really went after.

As the manager was visiting while I was being rung out he said "oh, and give this guy 10% off everything but the router bits! Wow! Some of these guys know the right buttons to push! I wanted to stay and spend the $100 I'd saved :D but was "closing the store" so I took my toys and went home.

Is the sheetmetal/tubing bandsaw by Jet new? I barely got to look at the 16" for $900 and the 18" for $1100, but they looked pretty good!

Is the sheetmetal/tubing bandsaw by Jet new? I barely got to look at the 16" for $900 and the 18" for $1100, but they looked pretty good!

The 16" was introduced at the IWF show in Atlanta in August 2002 and the 18" model was recently updated somehow from the original 18" model that has been available for a few years. For many folks, the 16" would be a better machine than the 14" with a riser, other than 2" less height. Sturdier and more horsepower, etc.

The "new" 18" has a tapered column that is supposed to be more rigid, and uses Carter (or Carter-style?) bearing guides instead of Euro-style. I have the older 18" and I think it's a nice machine for the pricetag.

Well Dave, just for you, here's my haul. I fully intended to buy that raised panel set you talked about, I even found it, but I totally forgot about it when I wrote my check!

Bought a miniature L-N block plane, a mini bullnose, a set of L-N cabinet scrapers (why do they work SO SO SO much better than the Crown ones?)

But the worst thing, by FAR, is that I signed up for the "Introduction to the Lathe" for this Sunday. Oh no! I mostly blame Ken Salisbury for this.

I have the new Jet 18 and if I was doing it again I would have bought the Grizzly 17 inch. I finally saw the Grizzly in person on the way to the 5 barns picnic. The Griz. has a bigger motor and 2" more resaw height but has aluminum wheels and is $350 LESS. I tried to cash in on the rebatre program and a 10% discount but got tired of waiting for jets canister dust collector on back order.

The 16" saw has alumin wheels and no fence and a smaller motor and still cost more than the Griz.

I'm with you on the planes. I'm still suffering with a couple of old Stanleys but one day... L-N cabinet scraper set? They have more than one? I just bought a Lee Valley cabinet scraper and am impressed with what it will remove in comparison to a hand scraper. If you mean just scrapers, I don't have an inkling as to why they would be better. It seems like steel would be steel except for holding an edge and taking one. My hand scraper (or whatever you call the ones with no added hardware) is just an old Stanley. Don't get me wanting something else now. :mad:

I really hate to lose another flat wood worker. Those turny things are addictive, so they say. I refuse to watch one spin for more than 30 seconds at a time. I think it has saved me. When the addiction is bad enough, don't forget that I like good planes. ;) In fact, you might write down my name and addy just for future reference.

Yeah, but it worked Steve! :D I'm still peeking in here and there. Just been so busy fighting the state over land they want to use for "their" new highway that they seem to think is more important than my parking lot... And now a nearby town wants to annex us much against our will, again. :eek: They don't want to grandfather in the shooting part of our business.

At any rate, I still feed the dogs from the freezer in the gara__ er... woodshop, so the longing is still there. I'll get back to hackin' wood one of these days. :rolleyes:
