Thanks John for working on this for me. I appreciate it.

I'll have Joseph's final bonker pic today.

But I'm voting for Joseph Peacock!:D

The SMC best of show prize for "going bonkers" should collectively go to the young people who participated...may they continue to turn out new bonkers and other things to their liking!

"Grand prize" for artistic excellence...no question: tie between Travis'...err....Keith's "Thong Bonker" and Dave Fifield's "Bomiknocker Bonker"

Honorable (?) Mention to Dale Thompson for taking creativity to a new, um...limit. (You pick the direction... ;) )

David Fried

What!!??##$! I have to pick ONE??? Can't we make up a few catagories to make it easier? How about ...

Best Bonker by an Old Flatulent Guy :D
Best Bonker by an Old Grumpy Guy
Best Bonker by someone who's age is less than Ken's Shoe Size :)
Best International Bonker ;)
Scariest Bonker
Biggest Bonker
Smallest Bonker
Most Unique

Etc...

Otherwise I might have to admit I see a five or six way tie.

Amen to your first statement Jim.

I appreciate your thinking my Thong Bonker was done by Travis.:D That to me is the ultimate compliment:)

Now to the voting part. This is why I will never be a judge. I can't decide. I truely belive all of these bonkers are absolutely great. The talent displayed here, from the first timers to the accomplished turners, is astounding (and no I'm not sucking up to anyone). I wish there was some way to collect all of the bonkers in one place for a public viewing. So I guess we have about 29 or 30 1st place winners.

My vote is for David Fifield.
I just keep thinking about someone selling those at a craft show.
That would give new meaning to the term Little Monster

I don't think I will ever be able to think of Travis in a different way. From now on he is a "thong bonker". I am not sure how I feel about this turn of events. At one time in my life I might have been embarassed but now being called a "thong bonker" might be an honor. I am sure Travis feels honored..:p

As far as my vote, and I am only gonna vote once. David Fifield's "Bomiknocker Bonker" gets my vote. I think if you get bonked with that you stay bonked.... :D

All of the kid's entries should get "Special Meritorious Awards for Spinny Things" and parent participation certificates. No better work is done than taking a kid spinning....;)

I agree that we really do need multiple categories. Here are my votes.

Best Segmented Bonker ---- That cheating 4.1 hour Fifield guy.

Most Bonkers -- That miserable low down dirty rotten Thompson fella.

Best use of Subliminable Imagery in a Bonker - Mr. Clardy.

Best use of Bonkers to Promote Their Fledgling Bonker Business - Clabo & Fitzgerald, Ltd.

Best Accidental Use of Screening Technology to Enhance a Bonker – Lee Doh! Raud

Best Bonker with a Special Purpose – Jeff (I'll be back) Horton.

Best Hope for the Future of Modern Bonketry – It’s a four-way tie: Rachel Hart, Joseph Peacock, Erika Ablett, and Mizuki Ablett

Best in Show - Lee DeRaud, Gary Max, John Hart, Don Orr, Doug Webb, Rich Stewart, Rachel Hart, Dave Fried, Paul Douglass, Bruce Shiverdecker, Dale Thompson, Curt Fuller, Stu Ablett, Mike Ramsey, Keith Burns, Barry Stratton, Jim Davenport, Christopher Hartley, Ken Fitzgerald, Steve Clardy, Blake McCully, Ernie Nyvall, Ken Fitzgerald, Joseph Peacock, Jeff Horton, Dale Thompson, Dave Fifield, Erika Ablett, Mizuki Ablett, Andy Hoyt, and George Conklin

Ozzy is voting for Rachel Hart's "light saber"...he especially likes the fact that it is a couple thousand miles away from his head. Disloyal little furball...

I told him that Maine is even further away, but he flinched when he saw Andy's avatar.

Then I told him that Japan is even further away, and he told me that wood floats, so most of that distance doesn't count.

I vote for Stu's girls - fantastic first effort! :)

Yep someone had to go and bring up the rules  . Dang your hide Dave ! I couldn't bring myself to vote but now I am going to have to vote twice. Joeseph, Rachel, Erica and Mizuki have to recieve the ULTIMATE award hands down ! Now Dave as you brought up the rules on voting I have to go with.....Drum Role please.........you guessed it...........Dave Fifields Bomiknocker Bonker for the Bonker of Bonkers ! (Serves you right Dave for bringing up the rules)

Gary Max told me on the phone that his Kentucky Bonkers are called "Marriage Counselors" in his neck of the woods. You just give one to both the husband and wife and let 'em have at it. This seemed to be the "Most Productive Use Of A Bonker".
......Although Dale Thompson and his Ant Stompin', Pogo Stickin', EntoBonker did have some merit...especially seein's how I hate Carpenter Ants.

I think it's only fair that Lee DeRaud should get the "I put my entry in first" award.

Andy should be awarded for "Bonkers That Look Most Like A Shovel"

To Our young new Turners:
Rachel taught me just how much guts it takes to walk up to this big machine, turn that dial for the first time and watch that big ol' piece of wood start spinning and purposely stick a big steel thing into it.
I figger that Joseph, Mizuki, and Erika all felt the same thing. I bow to you all. I can't quite explain how wonderful it is that you gave it a try!!:)

Keith Burns....With regard to you and your Thong fetish....
I....I....ok....well I guess someone has to like Underwear On A Stick.

Ken Fitzgerald and his Idaho Salmon Bonker deserve some recognition for starting all this. Let's bomb him!

Jeff Horton deserves recognition because if we don't, he'll come after each one of us.

Blake McCully deserves a special bow for "Most Inventive Recycling of Sports Equipment"

I really like Ernie Nyvalls NE Bonker. It is rustic, crude....perfect for bonkin'....it nearly got my final vote.

But...I just can't get away from it....Dave Fifield and his ingenius Bomiknocker Bonker....Get's my vote.

The young people are great. No way I could vote against what they have accomplished. Can't wait for future projects by them, with the talent their bonkers show.
But, I feel a kinship to Ernie Nyvall's natural edge bonker. We are both kinda knarly and bumpy, rough looking and skint bare in places. Ernie gets my vote.

Mike Ramsey

I think the kids should get a plaque for their great work on the bonkers!
I was thinking of what I believe to be a "Bonker" and there are several
that I like as a bonker.

Lee's simple small bonker.

John H because he put a strap on so's u don't drop it.

Ken F's because you can flip it back & forth for the double bonk
effect.

I like Gary's sledge hammer bonkers

Dave Fifield & his death-star is the most ingenius but I think if you
hit something with it it would embed in their skull and you would have to place your foot on em to try and pry it out! The word bonking to me
kinda means to bounce off of ones head.

My vote goes to Ernie for the natural edge bonker, you can bonk em
and rake some skin off in the process!

Well....let's just say that when I put in the 1st piece of wood for Joseph, he was excited UNTIL I turned the lathe on. With Eyes as big as saucers and a turning tool shaking in his little hands, I got this look like "you mean I'm supposed to stick THIS in THERE?????". So I stepped up there and held his hands and assisted him in holding and presenting the tool to the wood. After about 10 minutes of this, he was ready to "do it own his own".

So far, he's turned all the turning stock that "Mr. Mark" brought over for him to turn and all I could muster up that was small enough for him to gain turning experience. Now? He is ALWAYS looking for turning stock!! :D

This is the most bonkrific bonker contest I have ever had the privilege of being a part of. So much heart and soul has been put into this that even if it were called "Bonking with the Stars" or "American Bonker" or even "Bonker of Fortune" the excitement couldn't be any more intense, I must admit that I feel compelled to yeild to the the more senior bonkified judges, but I will pass along my bonkerized opinion in the form of a Bonker Vote. I must side with those who who express an inability to judge just one bonker as the best. All these Bonkers have their own individual merit and character and are all bonktastic. However, to comply with the rules(whatever they are) I must cast my Bonkified Vote...and so after much Head Bonking thought I cast my vote for what I believe to be the most useful and practical Bonker of them all (that is if you live in Texas).

Mike Ramsey's
Texas Mosquito Bonker!

Jeff Horton
03-20-2006, 8:21 PM
Hard choice for sure and I agree all the kids deserve an award!

Even though I think mine is the most practocal (if you had my job, somedays you would understand :)) I decided not to vote for myself. I will just go use it on some chisels in the Station and take out the frustration of loosing. Might store it in my toolbox in the truck just in case. ;)

I had to go with Dave Fifield Bomiknocker Bonker, just to cool. I keep thinking if I had one of those all I would have to do is show it. I bet everone would fall in line. Now be honest Dave, you did that in 4 hours???

John Hart
03-20-2006, 9:21 PM
Thanks for your support! I'm glad that you gave me a fair chance. I was glad I was able to enter the contest. I really liked Dave's Scepter Bonker and Paul Douglass Circle Thingie Bonker but I decided that my final vote should be Paul Doulass.

Thanks!
Rachel:)

I tried to ignore the rule about voting, but, I guess I can't.

First. Each Bonker is unique in it's own right. That makes them all a winner.

Second. We have the younger crowd/ newer turners. The imagination used in their offerings are inspiring.

With that said, I have to vote 30 first place ribbons!

Not a copout.........................just the truth!

Bruce

Amazing bunch of creative/humorous entries and a fun contest. Too many different types and styles to choose just one.

Because of that, my first place vote is a 4-way tie between Mizuki, Erika, Rachel, and Joseph.

And to Stu, Dennis, and John, I expect you to invest the prize money wisely. Perhaps 1/2 to their college fund and the other half to THEIR new lathes!!!

P.S. And if any of you want to see what mosquito's really look like, come on up!

Ernie Nyvall

Looking at the entries, I have to ask," Will it really bonk?" Now of course that depends on what you are bonking. For instance, Keith would win hands down if you were bonking thongs, but I'm not sure I really want that picture in my head... oops, too late. Dave Fifield's and Dale Thompson's appear to be meant to kill and have limited use as a bonker. Several others will bonk wood or salmon in which case I'd have to choose Mike Ramseys. However, the one thing that would bonk anything at whatever level of bonking you wanted to bonk would be Rachel Hart's Light Saber Bonker and that is where my vote goes.

...my Thong Bonker...

Let's just hope that what goes on in the turner's forum STAYS in the turner's forum. :)

Dave Fifield
03-21-2006, 5:34 AM
(snip) Now be honest Dave, you did that in 4 hours???

Yessir, really only about 3.5 hours. All parts were spindle turned fast (no fussy faceplate turning). Just under a half hour on the handle, another half hour on the ball, just under a couple of hours on the spikes (I lost one into the DC) and just over a half hour total on drilling/finish sanding/assembly/chuckling to self/photography/drinking tea/contemplation. It's actually a much simpler project to make than it looks. The trick to making the spikes nice and sharp is to take them off the lathe before they break, cut them to length on the bandsaw, then mount them in a cordless drill chuck and sand them to a point on a stationary belt sander while they are turning in the drill - real simple, effective and best of all, quick! :)

Cheers,
Dave Fifield

After excessive scrutiny and giving it many, many hours of thought (ouch!:o ), I concurr with the folks who elect to give all the honors to the kids who participated in this little contest!!! :D Hats off to all of them, on a job well done! :) I only hope that I'm around long enough to see some of their "later" work, as their skills and enthusiasm grows in this sport we know as turning! Great job to all the participants, but the kids collectively get my vote(s)!:)

David Fried

This is tough. There are a lot of great entries, I think I counted 31 entries by 28 folks. Please excuse me for being mean, cruel, and heartless in eliminating folks but it's got to be done.

The first round of eliminations were as follows:

Dave Fried - tacky to vote for yourself!
Ken Fitzgerald/Steve Clardy - sorry, no professionals!
Andy Hoyt - not a bonker
John Hart - too many previous wins!!
Gary Max - I just don't like 2 piece bonkers
Don Orr - not made for this contest
Dale Thompson - prize money would put you in a higher tax bracket
Dave Fifield - my favorite but not a bonker. Impaler??

So here are my semi-finalists: (Congrats to all!!)

Barry Stratton
Blake McCully
Bruce Shiverdecker
Christopher Hartley
Curt Fuller
Doug Webb
Erika and Mizuki Ablett
Ernie Nyvall
George Conklin
Jeff Horton
Jim Davenport
Joseph Peacock
Keith Burns
Lee DeRaud
Mike Ramsey
Paul Douglass
Rachel Hart
Rich Stewart
Stu Ablett

Now it got tougher. The second round of eliminations is really hair-splitting personal preferences:

Keith Burns - proportions
Bruce Shiverdecker - size/handle
Jim Davenport - too sporting
Stu Ablett - one entry per family - sorry!
Doug Webb - stripes out this year
Ernie Nyvall - makes me hungry
Jeff Horton - too fancy to use
Lee DeRaud - proportions
Rich Stewart - proportions
Paul Douglass - too pretty to use
George Conklin - looks a little light

Which left me with 8 finalists:

Barry Stratton
Blake McCully
Christopher Hartley
Curt Fuller
Erika and Mizuki Ablett
Joseph Peacock
Mike Ramsey
Rachel Hart

First, the runners up.

Fifth Runner Up: Barry Stratton
Fourth Runner Up: Christopher Hartley
Third Runner Up: Blake McCully
Second Runner Up: Curt Fuller
First Runner Up: Mike Ramsey

And my vote for the winner in the SMC Bonker Contest is a tie:

***** Erika and Mizuki Ablett
***** Joseph Peacock
***** Rachel Hart

As you can see I tried to be fair and thoughful - my apologies to anyone who's toes I may have bonked!

All I can say is this is one crazy place. My wife keeps yelling "what are you laughing at"

Anyway, my vote is with the young ones also. Wish I had been into this when my kids were young like that.

Congratulations to you all though, some great bonk'n going on around here!!!!

Edited to add: THANKS TO THE GUYS THAT THOUGHT UP THIS CRAZY CONTEST IN THE FIRST PLACE!

I cry foul! My toes are bonked! ;)

Actually I find it funny you would say that. I plan to use it bonking/hitting chisels.Thats why I used maple. Granted mahogany is a bit over the top but was salvaged wood that was just laying around.

Well I did not vote, at all, so I'll vote for..... all three of the tied 1st place entries.

Boy the girls will be happy, and I want to thank the kind souls who voted for my kids, and question the sanity of the three who voted for me  ;) :D

Great contest!

Cheers!
