My second hollow from! Had a blast doing it! Gotta long way to go though. I’m starting to get comfortable with the Scorpion tool I bought from Mr Pencil. Really is an excellent tool. I got this one to about 1/4" wall thickness before I chickened out. It’s from a red maple that was in my front yard and it was just too close to the house so it had to come down. It’s 8' x 4 1/2"s. I did figure out that I’m gonna have to raise the lathe a little. My aching back!!! I had the head stock slide all the way down to the end of the ways which made it a little more comfortable but it has to be raised.. Anyone have any pictures of there lathe raised? Love to see some ideas!

Wow, beautiful piece! Love the finish and the shape, I would be happy with a 1/4 wall on that piece. Nice job.

Until I zoomed the pictures to full size, I though it was some kind of ceramic. Neat stuff!

Fantastic form and finish. Great work Kurt. What kind of finish did you use on it? Thanks for sharing.

Regarding a lathe that's too low, it depends on how you have it mounted.

I built a bench to hold mine that was taller than normal. so that the heigth was right. Another option would be to make Riser blocks as high as you need them and mount the lathe on them.

Here is a picture I already had available that shows my new Nova raised up. Look towards the right side and you will see the blocks I added. Basically, I took some Jatoba 2x4's and glued them together, then added block on each end so that it had feet to sit on instead of bearing on the entire 2x4. That takes care of the slight uneven floor. Not the best picture for you but you should be able to get some ideas. I am 6'1" so I needed it to be 5" or so higher than the original stand.

Thanks for the kind replies guys! I guess I'll try some 4" solid blocks first! I'm 6'3"s so that should do it! The finish is just simple spray can Minwax poly put on in real thin coats.About 6 I think. The stuff dries really fast so it wasn't a big deal. I really don't like that much of a gloss but it's all I had on hand!

A beautiful hollowform indeed. I does look like some sort of plastic or glass. Very nice.

Well, I forgot to tell you how great the HF is. I concur with what's been said about it already!

Since you are using the DVR's stand, you'll have to make a platform as high as you need it. That is, unless someone else comes up with a better alternative.
