and so time consuming!!! I’ll bet I have 2 ½ day’s wrapped up in this one rail alone!

http://www.cjohnhebert.com/handrail1.jpg
First it’s find the right size logs. Shute, you’d thing with all the tree tops I’ve got laying around this wouldn’t be an issue..........HA WRONG
Then it’s peel, scrape and sand. Take the branch stubs off with the hand elec plane . Cut to size and try and match up the widths of the balusters with that section of natural taper in the rail.

http://www.cjohnhebert.com/handrail2.jpg
Then bolt them down with a 6" lag and half inch drill, clamp the bottom rail and remove for the rest of them. We won’t mention trying to plumb anything ha

Set it back up, fix those that slanted too much, then when everything looked fine.... go down and eyeball everything again and oops.... got a few more to fix!!!!
http://www.cjohnhebert.com/handrail4.jpg That first upright took the incline of the natural wall log sizes. Geesh........who would have thought this would have been so much trouble

You're slippin if that little bitty rail took you 2 1/2 days:D but it all looks great. The height of the deck doens't look as high as I thought you guys would be but that is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Sure is good to see that all coming together for you.

John, the more photos I see of the construction of your shop/home building, the more impressed I become. Well done!

How are the posts attached to the rails again. Did you run 1/2" lags up through the bottom rail? How are the tops secured?

They are special screws used in log building. I screwed then down through using a 1/2" heavy duty drill, and when I had 3 done, I slide the whole assembly out, laid it down and screwed up throguh the bottoms, then did the rest

What it's like:D :D
I went out this morning and scrounged up a few more, peeld them and knocked the branch nubs off with the power plane but have to let them dry a day or two before I can sand. Ice is just under the bark, so can't really sand till it dries

John.

That looks stunning, excellent job.

They would never let you build that here in New Jersey, ever.

Been a little cool here too, but no ice under the bark- only about 70 so far today. Saw temps in the low 80's two weeks ago :D :D

Any word from Sherry on the future of the Oak??

Yes. Lots of lathe time. Turning green pine is sticky business:(

Drilling holes in the rails with a hole saw then chopping out the waste is time consuming also. Don't have to worry too much about getting things dead accurate, as there isn't anything square, straight anywhere. :)
