We delivered the monster conference table Friday afternoon. To refresh, it's a 'relaxed' boat shape...52" wide at the ends and 76" at the middle, and 28' long. The top is seven panels 48" wide each with the grain running the width of the table and a 3" border around the perimeter. A previous post shows the base assembly, also kinda boat shaped. I spent a good deal of time building the base and trying to make it 'cooler'...and now that it's done nobody will ever see it. All they'll see is the big ol' plain legs. I deliberately wanted the legs 10-12" inside the top to keep them out of the way of chairs since this table will actually be used. It's not necessarily a 'pretty' table, and I'm not keen on the design...but it fit the needs of the customer, and we were making a concious effort to keep the cost down...so 'functional' may be a fair description. It is, however, huge...and since it went together pretty well (all things considered), I'll crow a little. :p

Somebody else prepared the veneered panels, but after that I have about 23 days in the building, and two in the finishing. It's 'stained' with Minwax natural stain/sealer, and shot with three moderately heavy coats of SW Dull Rubbed Effect PreCat lacquer.

This isn't a real good pic, but it kinda shows how long 28' of table is.

This is a pretty good representation of the color...

...and I put this one in because it's the only picture of me with the monster. I'm the one underneath actually working, while the big boys stand around and BS. Together they put something on the order of 650 pounds up there while I attached the top to the apron.

From the time we drove up to the time we left was right at 3-1/2 hours. I'm awfully gald it's gone...

Happy Monday to all...

KC,

That table turned out NICE!!! I like the color/finish. I'd be scared to death making something that big. You do good work!

That is really impressive, KC. I like the color and as you say the table is not decorative but is surely functional. Keep it indoors or some B-52 may try to land. Wow. Tires me out just look at it. Congratulations.

KC,

That IS a monster! I have enjoyed following your posts as you built this table and shared the challenges you faced. Great work, as always!

BTW, where do you mount the Mercury? Maybe a stern-drive would be better. ;)

KC, from the looks of the room these people appreciate the beauty of wood. With the addition of your beautiful craftsmanship there will be many smiles in that room!

Hey KC,
You did GOOD!

I hope those young'ins bring their own lunch ;) because I'd hate to be footin' the food bill for those guys!

The table worked out real nice. I hope the owners are as happy as you are.

Good work!!!

KC,
Great job on that monster :D I'm with Jim - I like functional - plus combined with that ceiling I think it is just the right look design wise also - the best of both worlds.

Is that all mesquite(sp?) I forget what you said from the original post. The coloring is fantastic.

If you add every project that I've ever done up - they don't come close to 28' long - unless you count the cutoffs from the design changes I made along the way

Good job KC, like the looks and the color. When I saw the first pic with teh two guys standing on it, I said, what are those clowns doing. Then I scrolled down to the next one and could see.

Hopefully the check is in the bank. So what's next?

Great job! Just out of idle curiousity, how did you move this mini-aircraft carrier? How many BF of wood (or is it in units of forests?) did you need?

That table is almost beyond words KC! Beautiful and Awesome just does not do it justice. I realize how difficult it can be to get large work such as this to turn out just so.............but I think you nailed it! Excellent design and the Color and Finish are breathtaking. Very nice job..........I hope you were rewarded generously for the effort.........you deserve it! Thanks for sharing the pictures..................I totally enjoyed looking at the finished table and the lovely surroundings where it lives. :D

Thanks for the kind words, men. To answer questions, the top is 1/4" mesquite on 1-1/2" MDF. That was a mistake I won't be involved in again. Very heavy, a bit warpy :( , and after all the hassle of making the panels, I think we woulda been money ahead (literally) by using solid 8/4" material...and it certainly woulda been quicker. Had the top been solid stock, I believe the BF total would be somewhere around 500...give or take 20 or 30. We moved it in two pickup trucks...Four sections of top and two base sections in an F20, and three sections of top and one base in my wimpy F150.

Again, I'm glad it's over. :)

Very nice work KC! My very first thought though, was, "Here is a guy who is confident in his work." This came seeing you lying under the table with those two gentlemen standing right over the top of you. :D
