i was just reading the post about "why my dog does this" and have a dog that does something similar and my parents as well have one that does it very distinckly but my question is to those of us what are our pet census no.s?
cats?---dogs? i feel that people with pets are quite often more freindly and considerate than others without. and while on a run here does having two of one kind better for the pets say 2 dogs or one and one cat?or 2 cats? those of you who know how to set up a poll and want to fo rthis go for it i am just posting this as a "curious goerge" that loves dogs and tolerated cats:)

4 dogs here Larry, but when the kids house gets done there will be 2 dogs. Mine is a A.K.C. Labrador retriever...wifes is a purebred mutt. Cats don't have a very long shelf life, I have nothing against the sneaky litttle devils but I'll take a dog anyday over a cat.

Love my dog, the dog loves to " play " with cats when they come into the back yard. Ever see a cat jump a 6 foot fence in one leap? Pretty Impressive :)

Ages: Cory 11.7 yo
Dalton 11.7 yo (litter mates)
Taz 5.3 yo (Cory's daughter)
Tainey 1.7 yo.
Rescue dog Charlie 1.7 yo
At least the 2 young 'ens keep each other entertained!! Jim

hey scott// i can picture that quite well back in my childhood days:) the worst thing about cats is that they go inside and the dogs go outside, they have got it together:) at the present i have just one dog the last cat left after 19yrs. now the better half tried to talk me into a pair of them(cats) that was the deal from the owner/ i didnt swallow that but i havnt got home yet to see if she listened???

We always had dogs when I was a kid, Labrador Retrievers. Always house dogs, at one time we had 3. Life was interesting. Also the fact that we have no Phesants to hunt in my area any more makes a good bird dog less appealing.
Now its cats.... I guess it's the maintaince free quality. 1 at home & 2 in the shop. My "house cat" was a drop off, nutered & declawed. It's not afraid of anything, nail guns, air compressor etc. It thinks trying to catch the sawzall blade is fun too. Shop cats (brother & sister) were also drop offs, appx 6 weeks old, nothing but skin & bones when they showed up.

One dog: Sheltie, Dollie. 2 years old (epileptic)
7 farm cats, only one interacts with us: Jerome 18 years old

Jerome and dollie actually play together very well. I am pretty sure that Jerome is a garfield and fools my little foolhardy dog into tangling her leash up and tricking her to have us open the door so he can sneak in.

He sneaks in and goes right to the toilet. He will drink there for 10 minutes straight if left to his own devises.

The cat also sneaks into the garage as the door closes making the door sensor kick it back up!! costing me some heat, I tell you!

I wish I had a Roscoe dog like Tod's. They are one of my fave's.

We used to have a dog when the kids were growing up. When our last one died from old age we decided that we wanted more freedom to come and go or not come home if we found something interesting to do. Having a house trianed dog waiting at home made staying somewhere too long impossible if the dog had been left inside. Also going away on the spur of the moment was more of a problem because you can't always take the dog and boarding is a hassle and costly.

We adopted our present cat George, as in "Lonesome George" or "Curious George" from the local human society. He is our third cat. The previous one lived 19 years. He has been a great cat. He likes to play and can leap 3 feet or more off the floor to catch small balls or pompoms in mid air. I think he was a shortstop in a former life. George doesn't like the shop when tools are running, but does patrol to keep the mice in check. Best of all he desn't mind a whole lot if you go away for the day or a week as long as there is food and water in his bowls.

My dog is a corgie. She lives in the house and is a constant source of entertainment. She keeps the cat (persian) in control and up on top of the footstool most of the time. They usually get in a nightly scrap which is better entertainment than is on the TV. We play ball everynight too. Don't know what I would do without Penny. She is actually my son's dog that he left with us when he went off to college.

Current dog is Ozzy, 4.5yo 24lb Corgi/Westie mix (pictures elsewhere: I did a "Shop Dogs" thread sometime last summer). Before that was a pure-bred Corgi that looked a lot like Jim's.

We've always had labs. Latest group is Leo a 3 yr old yellow lab and Everett, a 7 yr old black lab. We've got assorted fish as well.

The newest wrinkle is Logan, our 8 month old Maine Coon Kitten. I think he chases our son almost as much as the dogs. Didn't think I'd be a cat person, but Logan is pretty cool.

They all live in the office while we're at work. And now the kitten runs to their room along with the dogs when we leave in the morning so they can get their treats. Who said you can't train a cat?

For many years, it was always two dogs and two cats. We're down to one dog, Jack, who actually adopted us. Then our daughter's cat, Sweda, who incidently had been a show cat and breeder prior to our adopting her and lastly, Twister, an energetic Cali. This one we also adopted last fall. She was a survivor of the destructive tornadoes that went through the Stoughton area. LOML thought "Twister" was an appropriate name to give her! :) Don't believe we'll ever be without pets! :D

Larry, I am currently between pets having lost my faithful shop dog of nearly 14 years. My shop is empty without my little dog to keep me company.

Like Tod, I agree cats are okay if they are properly prepared.....

Jim, Penny looks like a wonderful dog. I have often thought of getting a Corgy. How are they as far as shedding. Our last dog was a Cairn and despite the long hair she did not shed much.

She sheds pretty bad but the wife brushes her out on the front porch regularly and keeps the carpet vaccumed. Some of them don't shed much but I guess we got one of them that does. She's a dandy all right.

I love cats and dogs, as long as hey don't live in my house, make noise and poop in my yard.

My kids have been after me to get a dog for the last couple of years. I have so far been able to convince them that they don't need to own a dog. Told them as long as the neighbors have one they can go over there and take care and pet it all they want.

I remember nagging my Dad when I was little to get a dog, he kept denying the request. I just didn't understand. Now I know the negative points of having that type of pet, as Lee sid about the dependancy and also my big thing is mowing doggie-doo.

We have a few fish, that will have to do for now.

We have two dogs...mine is a medium-sized short-haired yellow mutt who thinks she runs the place, and LOML's is a large long-haired black clown in a dog outfit. Funny thing is LOML's dog is almost always by my side...he's definitely a "daddy's boy"...and my dog hangs out with LOML most of the time. Both are adopted from rescue organizations, and they are our surrogate kids.

We also occasionally dog-sit a friend's year-old golden retriever, so he's like the cousin that comes to stay for the weekend occasionally. Both LOML and I prefer dogs to cats, but until recently, we would also cat-sit for a friend on occasion. Both of our dogs really enjoyed the kitty visits, and all the animals got along very well, but unfortunately she passed away a few months ago at the age of 18.

We have a dog - Petey.
Petey is a small terrier mutt we got from a rescue shelter. He is a very cute and loving companion, very well behaved. Unlike the other dogs we have had, Petey is dumb as a doorknob. Don't get me wrong, he does all the things he needs to do, it's just, well, when the good Lord handed out smarts Petey was otherwise occupied.

1 dog & 2 cats. The dog and the orange cat were shelter adoptions. The gray/white cat was a stray that adopted me. Looks like I already uploaded these on other threads as SMC wouldn't let me re-upload (least not without renaming and gobbling up more space) so here's links to the attachments.

Here's China - didn't like the name the shelter gave her and was having a hard timing picking a name for her on the way to pick her up. All of a sudden David Bowie's China Girl came on the radio, and ...
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=20290&d=1118096925

P.K. (Porch Kitty) adopted me finally. Didn't know for quite a while whether he was a male or female as he wouldn't let anyone close to him at first. He turned into a real affectionate cat. Even curls up between China's paws for a nap.
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=15599&d=1107118846

Gidget is another shelter adoption. She's afraid of absolutely nothing and gets into everything. She loves wrestling with China and even the neighbors dogs.

We have had 1 dog for a number of years. Cats? there are always some around and as long as they stay out of the barn they are tolerated. They do keep the mice and rat population down. We inherited 4 rabits last year. We kept them pened up until the garden was done for the season and then turned them loose. There are now domestic rabbits all over the neighborhood. The neighbors like seeing them around and they haven't caused any trouble as of yet. We are going to have a rabbit round-up soon so I can grow a garden. I think they will taste quite good. It is possible though, that the owls will beat me to the pot. We have a pair of chinese owls that come by every spring. I call them that because they always thin the cat population down. The light coloured cats seem to disappear first. :D We usually have chickens and turkeys but the coop is in temporary disuse.
When I was growing up, we had all kinds of unusual pets. Possums, armidillos, snapping turtles, snakes; including, bull snakes, pigmy and diamond- back rattlers, blue racers, gardener, northern water snakes, and a few pythons. At one time we had 74 bats in the house because of some research my dad was working on. Tarantulas, racoons, lizards........when we lived in town we were the only house in the neighborhood that never got broken in to.:D
Did I mention squirrels? I raised 2 orphaned fox squirrels that used to love picking on my mom. They would chase her around the house. We also raised 2 orphaned sparrow hawks. Those 2 birds were a blast. Now we just have the usual dog. This collie is a great pet who keeps track of the kids and always lets us know when sombody comes around or when the neighbors cows are out. If I could just break her of chasing cars..........

.....The newest wrinkle is Logan, our 8 month old Maine Coon Kitten. I think he chases our son almost as much as the dogs. Didn't think I'd be a cat person, but Logan is pretty cool.....
Gary - You're gonna love Logan. Our Maine Coon Cat Beulah was with us for 18 years, and HE was just about the best thing ever. 22 pounds of a Jabba the Hutt, Garfield, and Archie Bunker combination. Feet were huge and had what passed for an opposable thumb. We used to play catch with ping pong balls. He was the only cat I've ever gotten along with.

The Hoyt Family is currently owned by Marlowe (rescued 6 y/o German Shepherd female) and Archie (rescued 4 y/o Golden Retriever female). In turn they are commanded by Crystal who is a +/- 16 y/o cat of unspecified DNA. We just feed 'em and love 'em.

Years ago in the '80s I went to traffic school in CA taught by a highway patrolman (got a speeding ticket) and he told us that by CA state law if you hit a dog with your car you are required to render it assistance and attempt to locate the owner. If you hit a cat you can just drive on.

Could be true in a strictly legal sense, in most places a dog is required to wear a tag identifying the owner and the clinic that vaccinated it for rabies. Usually not a requirement for cats. The specifics of the law vary between states and cities, but cats that are outdoors are often considered feral - which essentially means wild and uncared for.

BTW, a couple of years ago the number of pet cats passed the number of dogs in the US. It's still true that more people have fish than a dog or a cat, and a lot more money is spent on fish than either dogs or cats. I was just looking at those numbers today in an article.

Our count - 1 dog (and one recently deceased), 1 cat, 5 fish, 1 cockatiel, 1 daughter begging for a gecko, 1 son hinting around for a ferret and absolutely no horses and none planned.

We had cats for about 30 years. Not too bad, but more along the lines of decorations than pets. I had a dog as a child. Now we have two spayed female Australian Shepherds, about 7 years old. One is a rescue. The two girls make a rich life for us. They are more my dogs than anything. They are great companions for the grandsons. Tess, the younger of them, loves to sneak into the shop and steal cutoff pieces of wood and carry them away to chew into oblivion. When our last cat was still here, they all would play chase through the house and yard. The cat would usually start it, and the game was afoot. Cats are not especially fast. Ours seemed to enjoy being caught. She would stop running and the dogs would stand over her barking. She had one of the dogs trained to get me to let the cat in. The dogs understand commands in sign language.

A cat adopted us about 1 1/2 years ago. The only good thing about it is that it ate all the chipmunks, the only bad thing about it (other than it is a cat) is that is ate all the Quail in our fence rows that encompass our side and back yard.

Oh and one other thing. since the cat has been here, no more garter snakes.

As long as the cat can survive outdoors, I guess we will keep feeding it.

there is also one cat, lovingly called the Wench, cause she has attitude far beyond her minute size.

all three of our pets are very hands-on. Ie. typical morning on the weekends if I try and sleep in is: the LOML and I attempting to snuggle, only to be interrupted by one whining Dachshund (tall bed, he requires a lift to get up on it, and thinks that is his place to sleep if we're there), one wiggly Terrier, both in the MIDDle of the bed (I said Attempting to snuggle didn't I?) with the Wench at the foot of the bed thinking bad things about the dogs. Sometimes with fur flying and bad words flying, but lately there has been an armed truce.

Well, I guess I need to update my entry. As of yesterday afternoon, we are now fostering another one. LOML got a call from a shelter in Duncanville,IIRC, that had what they originally thoght was a Cocker Spaniel. Finally looked at her teeth...all baby teeth, gee it might be an Irish Setter!! (In my best Mark Harmon voice) "Ya think???" Shes about 10 to 12 weeks old, found at a busy intersection of 2 major roads.
Unfortuanately, the shelter has had some bad upper resperatory crud going around, so TLOML quickly volunteered her garage as the temporary puppy palace! Seems t me, she never did that at the other house for my tools. So Darcy is in quarantine with us until Mon or Tues. If she doesn't break with anything nasty, we'll integrate her into the pack. Now, if we can hold her down long enough to clip those nails!! OUCH!!!!!! Jim.
