I finally finished the coffee table that I've been working on for my BIL. He is going to display all of his Police Department patches and badges in it. What y'all think?
(I should have dusted it off before I took the pictures.http://www.woodworking.org/InfoExchange/images/smiles/icon_redface.gif)

Very nice, Guy. Walnut, I assume? What finish did you use?

Looks good. I'd like to see it with the patches when he gets it all set up.

The finish is pretty simple. I sprayed it with 2 coats of 2# cut if shellac as a sealer, sanded it with 400 grit, and then sprayed 3 coats of PolyCrylic satin. He has pets and kids, and I wanted something fairly tough. He's going to send me some pictures as soon as he gets all of his stuff in it. I'll post them as soon as he does.

Guy, it looks like just the right thing for displaying that memorabilia! Nice job.

Guy, it turned out great. Does the glass simply come off to get the patches in, or is there some other way to get to the inside?

Lookin' good, Guy!!! I'll bet he'll be quite happy with it and maybe even "earn" you a "warning ticket" or two! :D :)

The glass is just sitting in a rabbet so it can come out that way. I also have some small trim around the bottom side of the top to keep it in place. That way, he can remove the entire top instead of just the glass. Leaving it in the frame should give it more support. Since he can't walk and chew gum at the same time, I figured that would be the safest way.

Nicely done Guy. Is that velvet on the bottom of the inside? If it is, how did you install it?

It's not velvet, it's a cheap satin. I just used double-sided tape on the back. I laid the cloth face down and put the "wonderboard" on top of it, and stretched the cloth tight and stuck it to the tape.

Beautiful aprons on your table. Nice display of the figure in the walnut. I'm sure your BIL will be very proud of this piece.

That's how I did the bracelet boxes I did at Christmas. Nice to know it will work for larger projects as well.
Thanks again for sharing.

Very very nice, is the glass a beveled edge? I like the bead at the base of the aprons and the wood finished beautifully

The project looks okay but that wood is stunning!!!

Just kidding. I think you nailed pretty much every aspect of this baby Guy. You made the right call on access, the proportions and craftsmanship are just right, the walnut really does look great. The red should really pop the display, although if it gets some sun and fades to pink, you might have a problem: cops and pink don't go together very well, do they?

I agree with the above: we need a picture with the display and without dust. Great job.
