I've been lurking here for about a year, avoided joining as I though this forum had to many rules, but since the recent forum changes here, I could no longer see the photos that are posted here I realized I had no choice but to join. I must say I've learned a lot here and have gained knowledge through you all and would like to say a big Thank you to all that have helped in my learning curve. The internet is a strange place … You folks didn't even know that you were assisting in my learning!

I usually hang out on the Canadian forums as I live in northern British Columbia, Canada and work mostly with locally harvested air dried wood (except walnut).

A few photos of some of my projects for the photo police. Some are from plans and some are variations. The idea for the ripped, torn, cracked or whatever bandsaw box came from the cover of the March 2004 catalogue from Lee Valley. A fellow Canadian and I worked from the cover photo and made a set of plans (with permission from Lee Valley and the original owner). Took us about a month before we came up with a scaled plan so
that the entire box could be made on a 14 inch bandsaw.

Looks like we will be learning from you now my friend. Nice boxes, while that is not my thing I can surely appreciate the work that goes into them. Welcome to the creek.

Welcome Brian. I'm kinda new here too. Wanted to welcome you and complement you on those exquisite boxes. The torn band saw box is an attention getter. I haven't done a band saw box but when I do, that one is just my cup of tea. Thanks for posting.

Welcome! The box's look very nice Brian, But I was looking at the last box and I was just wondering how and or what you used to get that nice gloss finish on it? Very impresive.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and the welcome.

Richard … I have had good luck with Varathane or Fletco Wipe on Poly. On the difficult surfaces and corners on the inside of the box and the inside of the drawers I use a small flat artist brush to 'cut in' the difficult areas and then if the area is big enough I switch to a small lint free cloth held in a haemostat (small long clamp) and continue finishing, if the area is not big enough I continue with the brush as wipe on poly is so forgiving and levels very nice and leaves no brush marks.

On the outside of the box and drawers finishing is easier so I switch to a 5 inch square lint free cloth folded in thirds one way and half the next way to give you a fairly thick pad, I apply just enough poly to wet the box evenly on all surfaces with anywhere's from six to eight coats sanding with 320 about every seconds coat.

Some people think I'm goofy when it comes to finishing as prior to breaking out the poly I vacuum my whole shop and turn on the dust filters for a few hours. Once the coats are applied I like to cover the project if possible with a cardboard box to make sure no dust nibs find their way to the finish.

Welcome, Brian, and thanks for the pics. The torn box looks great. I"m new enough getting back into woodworking that I didn't know Lee Valley existed when the catalog cover picture came out, so I've not seen anything like your torn box before. I love the combination of craftsmanship and whimsy. The other boxes are beautiful and the willow chair is great, but the torn box really gets my attention. Looking forward to seeing (and learning) more from you.

P.S. I have a lot of experience with less friendly and more heated Internet forums, but once you get accustomed to talking nice to people, it kinda grows on you. ;)

Welcome Brian. Really like the boxes, that first one cracked me up. You are finding some very nice wood up there, and know what to do with it.

Hi Brian!

I'm from Southern BC, Kelowna.

I have a good friend here, Myrna Harrod, who is from Dawson Creek, do you know her parents?

VERY nice work to say the least, I'd need to get a new smaller bandsaw to make those cut, my resaw is good for slabbing, but not corners!

Can't wait to see some more of your work.

You tips on finishing are great, my Dungeon workshop is not the friendliest place for finishing, so I have to do a similar thing to what you do with cleaning, fileters for a while, then finish. the cardboard box is a good idea!

Cheers!

Welcome to the Creek Brian, great work both in construction and finishing.

I think that you will find the rules here will allow plenty of leeway for you to express your opions and thoughts, they are mainly in place to remind everyone to do it in a civil/respectful manner.
