Well, I coverted my jet mini to a real variable speed drive.. I wrote up a big story about how I did it and all, but when I tried to post it the server didnt like me.

Here are the pics, and if anyone wants to know what or how I did it; just ask and I will be happy to post it.

Nice looking retro! I'd consider a belt guard if it was mine!

Cool, now two questions.

1. what did it cost?

2. will it work on a 220 motor?

Wow, that looks a little like a Tim Allen Tool Time modification. That's a little more than the standard Jet mini .5 hp motor isn't it? ARRGH ARRGH ARRGH!!!

To answer the questions:

1. It ended up costing right at 150 total. I got the VFD on Ebay for 80, motor for 50, and the misc electronic switches and dials were about 20.

2. The input power for the VFD is 240V single phase.

And yes Curt, that is a true 3/4 hp 3 phase motor being driven by the siemens VFD. I can tell you that it is definately heavier and a lot bigger than the stock jet motor. It is also a fan cooled explosion proof motor (totally sealed)....so no worries about sawdust getting in to it.

Andy,

If you would like to email your Jet Mini Mod files we can post them in the Articles Forum. Zip them up into one file, better yet if you have an html page done include it and it will save me some time.

Wow, a Cadillac disguised as a compact!!! :D That's way cool, Andy! I have true variable on my big Vega bowl lathe and almost hate going over to my spindle lathe with the clutch type variable on it. Great job! :)
